 WHAT IS IGNITION??

The system in an IC Engine which produces spark

to ignite the mixture of fuel and air

It is the combination of all devices required to

produce an electric spark of desired intensity

and at proper moment called as Spark Ignition
System
Spark produces at the end of Compression stroke

 FUNCTIONS OF SYSTEM

PRODUCES:- 30000 volt spark across spark plug

DISTRIBUTES:- High voltage spark to each spark

plug in correct sequence.

TIMES:- Times the spark so that it occurs as piston

nearing top dead centre

VARIES:- Spark timing with load, speed & other

conditions
 REQUIREMENT

Provides good spark between the electrodes of the plugs at the

correct timing
The duration of the spark must be enough with sufficient energy to

ensure that ignition of the mixture has high chances of occurring.

The system must distribute this high voltage to each of the spark

plugs at the exact time in every cycle

It should function efficiently over the entire range of engine speed

It should be light, effective and reliable in service

 BATTERY IGNITION SYSTEM

BATTERY provides power for system

IGNITION COIL changes battery

voltage to 30,000V during normal

operation and has a potential to
produce up to 60,000V

IGNITION SWITCH allows driver to

turn Ignition switch ON & OFF

DISTRIBUTOR It causes the spark to

occur at each plug earlier in the

compression stroke as engine speed
increases, and vice versa

 WORKING

When ignition switch gets On position, current flow from

battery to primary winding of ignition coil.
The current in the circuit goes on increasing exponentially
during the period that the contact breaker points are connected.
As the current build up in primary circuit due to this
electromagnetic energy generated and stored in ignition coil.
When the contact beaker point open the electromagnetic field
buildup in primary circuits collapses and energy projected to
secondary circuit.

As brake period of contact beaker is very short EMF

induced in secondary coil is high and proportional to
the rate of change of flux in windings.
 The sudden High Voltage directed to spark plug in
order to firing with the help of distributor condenser
stores energy during the brake period of contact
beaker and releases during make period .
Voltage multiplier dependent on the number of turns
of primary and the secondary coil.
 APPLICATION

Is commonly used in cars and light commercial

vehicle
 MAGNETO IGNITION SYSTEM

MAGNETO:-

It is source of energy & is  a small electric

generator which is rotate by the engine
and is capable of produce a very high
voltage. It contains primary and
secondary windings in it.

Distributor is used in multi cylinder

engine to regulate spark in each spark

plug at correct sequence.

SPARK PLUG

It uses high voltage from ignition

coil to produce an arc in the
combustion chamber

First when the engine starts or during cranking magneto

rotate which generates a very high voltage.

The ignition capacitor connected in parallel with contact

breaker. One end of magneto winding is also grounded

through contact breaker.
The cam regulates the contact breaker. Wherever the breaker

open, current flows into condenser, which charged the

condenser.

As the condenser become charger the primary

current falls and the magnetic field collapses. This

will induces a much higher voltage in condenser.
Now this high voltage EMF produce spark at correct

spark plug through distributor

 APPLICATION

Used in (SI engine) two wheeler

Also in Tractors, washing machines , buses Marine
engines, Natural gas engines

 ELECTRONIC IGNITION SYSTEM

Electronic ignition system is developed to reduce

emissions, increase mileage and improve
reliability.
Electronic ignition system produce stronger spark

which is required to burn the lean mixture in the

combustion chamber.
Electronic ignition systems differ from conventional

ignition systems in the distributor components.

BATTERY is a electrochemical device for

producing and storing electricity. It

supplies the necessary energy for the
ignition system.
IGNITION SWITCH on switch enables

the operator to turn the ignition system

on or off in starting or stopping the
engine.

 IGNITION CONTROL

MODULE is an electronic
switch that turns the ignition
coil's primary current either ON
or OFF. Control unit performs
the same operation as that of
contact points in conventional
type of ignition system.

 SPARK PLUG uses ignition

coil high voltage to ignite the fuel

mixture. Spark plug has a simple
purpose of supplying a fixed gap
along which a high voltage
passes through this gap.

IGNITION COIL produces high

voltage required to make current

pass in the gap at spark plugs.
Ignition is pulse type transformer
capable of producing a short fire
of high voltage for beginning
combustion.
 APPLICATIONS

This system is used in AIRCRAFT ENGINES.

It also used in modern bikes and cars
