Abstract

The concept behind this project of “Metal Detector” is to ensure avoiding

any illegal or unauthorized entry of metallic objects, bombs, knifes, guns
within the luggage bags of the person carrying them in the public places
like theatres, shopping malls, parks, airports, hotels, railway, stations etc.

 It is a low-cost metal detector using a transistor circuit. It is in simple

words A Colpitts oscillator working in the medium band frequency.

 This thesis gives an overview of metal detector working principle and

applications.
Introduction
In our daily life, we have got used to witness many detectors that detect metallic
devices like guns, bombs, etc.

To prevent any unlawful entry of guns and bombs in public places, a security
system is developed by designing various  electronics projects by using a
proximity sensor.

The system uses Arduino as the main controller for metal detection.

 Among various types of metal sensors and various types of metal detecting
technologies, concentric type induction coil sensor and Colpitts oscillator used in
this system.
Continued;
 This system consists of two configurations_ Hardware configuration and Software
configuration.

 The hardware components include induction coil sensors which senses the frequency
changes of metal, Arduino and buzzer.

 The software configuration includes a program controller interface. C programming

language is used to implement the control system. This control system is based on the
Arduino.

 This system is mainly used in mining and high security places such as airport, plaza,
shopping mall and governmental buildings.

 Moreover, the advantages of colpitts oscillator over traditional metal detector will be
described in this thesis.
Aim and objective

This project aim-

Aims to discover many possibilities of enhancing home and

business security

To research undertaken from existing designs

the main focus is features of the system that can be adapted

which is user friendly.
Continued

Objective is-

To study and design Colpitts oscillator

To emphasize the advantages of Colpitts oscillator for metal

detection

To develop Arduino program and classify metal

Literature review

• Detection of metal present->

• The autor said that metal Detector is a security device which is used for
detecting metals which can be harmful, at various places like Airports,
shopping malls, cinemas etc….Whenever some current passes through
the coil, it generates a magnetic field around it.

• And the change in the magnetic field generates an electric field.

• According to Faraday’s law, because of this Electric field, a voltage

develops across the coil which opposes the change in magnetic field and
that’s how Coil develops the inductance, means the generated voltage
opposes the increase in the current.

Methodology
• The system include two main process
(1)Metal Detection &
(2)Alarm system

• Copitts Oscillator is used to detect metal which include LC tank circuit

• By detecting inductance of coil, copitts oscillator can know metal or non metal

• PIR sensor detect when warm body pass through it

• The servo door is opened by arduino

• In second steps, alarm and show message on LCD is actived when metal is detected
Solfware Requirement
• Arduino IDE
• C++

Hardware requirement
• Copitts Oscillator
• Potentiometer
• Arduino Uno
• 16*2LCD
• Buzzer
• PIR motion sensor
• servomotor
Component
Scope Of Thesis

Arduino Uno is a microcontroller board based on the

Atmega,328p

In the system, arduino uno is used as brain of the system

It has 14 digital I/O pin and 6 analog input

Uno can be powerd via the USB connection or with an

external supply
Continued;

• PIR sensor has three pins, a Ground and a VCC for powering the module
and an output pin which gives high logic level if an person is detected,

• PIR sensor has two potentiometer one for adjusting the sensitivity of the
sensor & the other for adjusting time the output signal stay high when
person is detected

• A 16*2 LCD means it can display 16 character per line and three are 2
such line

• Colpitts Oscillator design uses two centre-tapped capacitor in series with

a parallel inductor to form its reason tank circuit.
Implementation Procedure

Connect copitts Oscillator and arduino in order to detect metal

Detect person with PIR sensor and unlock servo door

Setup arduino and metal detect alarm system

If non-metal is detected, skip alarm system

If metal is detected, activate alarm system

Show detect result in LCD display

Conclusion
• The design of a device that could detect metal with the following features was
designed and implemented.

• Display (LCD indicating “METAL DETECTED’’ if there metal

• Doors (to control the inflow of people in and out, and which will remain closed if
a metal is detected or otherwise will open if not) 

• Alarm (sounds if a metal is detected)

• To conclude I will make this Metal Detector as a portable size, a reliable usage
for security reason, an accurate access for understanding oscillator and a high
security inquiring system.
