Current Practices Of Assessment And

Evaluation At Upper Primary Level At

PSE School

School:-
GREATER VALLEY SCHOOL,
GREATER NOIDA
Assessment
• Assessment is the process of gathering and
discussing information from multiple and diverse
sources in order to develop a deep understanding of
what students know, understand, and can do with
their knowledge as a result of their educational
experiences; the process culminates when
assessment results are used to improve subsequent
learning
Formative
Assessment
Types of
Assessment Summative
Assessment

Formative Assessment
• This occurs in the short term.
• Feedback to the learner is immediate .
• Enables the teacher to "turn on a dime" .
• Can be both formal and informal Examples: a very
interactive class discussion; a warm-up, closure, or exit
slip; a on-the-spot performance; a quiz, class test .
Summative Assessment
• This takes place at the end of a large chunk of learning.
• Results may take time to be returned to the student/parent.
• Feedback to the student is usually very limited.
• Teachers can use these assessments to identify strengths
and weaknesses of curriculum and instruction, with
improvements affecting the next year's/term's students.
Example: End term exam or annual examinations .
Evaluation
• Evaluation is a systematic determination of a
subject's merit, worth and significance, using
criteria governed by a set of standards. It help in
decision-making. The primary purpose of
evaluation, in addition to gaining insight into prior
or existing initiatives, is to enable reflection and
assist in the identification of future change

be carried out by the teachers and will be graded term-wise on a 3-point grading scale
(A=Outstanding, B=Very Good and C=Fair).
• The aspect of regularity, sincere participation, output and teamwork be the generic
criteria for grading in the following co-scholastic activities:

(a).Work Education - Work Education refers to skill-based activities resulting

in goods or services useful to the community
(b) Art Education (Visual & Performing Art)
(c) Health and Physical Education (Sports/Martial Arts/Yoga/NCC etc.)
Conclusion
• In Primary level the burden of examination should be reduced.
• A non pen-paper mode of examination is best in the primary level,
and for upper primary level pen-paper mode is best.
• The teacher should be given the freedom for deciding the number
of tests to be conducted because the need of each stream and each
paper is different.
• Freedom should be there to choose the type of assessment because
the need of each subject vary from each other.
• The mode of evaluation and assessment should also be flexible to
accommodate differences.
