Present Simple

( I do )
A. Study this example:
• Alex is a bus driver, but now he is in bed asleep.
• He is not driving a bus. (He is sleeping)
• But He drives a bus. (He is a bus driver)
• Drive(s)/ work(s) / do(es), etc. is the present simple.

I/we/you/they drive/work/do etc.


he/she/it drives/works/does etc.
B. We use the present simple to talk about things in general,
something that happens all the time repeatedly, or something
that is true.

• Nurses look after patients in hospitals.


• I usually go away at weekends.
• The earth goes around the sun.
• The cafe opens at 7.30 in the morning.
• She designs websites for the company.
• Many lawyers appear in a court everyday.
• They work for a legal practice.
C. We use do/does to make questions and negative
sentences.
Do I/we/you/they work?
Does he/she/it drive?

I/we/you/they don’t drive.


He/she/it doesn’t work.

• I don’t go away very often.


• What does this word mean?
• Why do you always drive so fast?
• Rice doesn’t grow in cold climates.
• My class starts at 8 am and finishes at 1 pm.

• We use be to say who somebody is or what
something is.
– I am Sam -She isn’t from Scotland.
– We are from the UK -We’re not friends
– She is a website developer
– It is in the US. -He’s not my type.
• We use be to ask personal questions.
– Where are you from? -Are you a singer?
– What is his name? -Is she a vegetarian?
– What is her job? -Is he a programmer?

Present Continuous
A. Study this example situation.
• Janet is in her car. She is on her way to work. She
is driving to work.
• This means: she is driving now.
• The action is not finished.

I am driving.
He/she/it is working.
We/you/they are writing. Etc
B. I am doing something = I’m in the middle of doing it;
I’ve started doing it and I haven’t finished.

Example:
• “Please don’t make so much noise! I’m trying to
work.”
• ‘Where is Mark?’ – ‘He is having a shower.’
• Let’s go out now. It isn’t raining any more.
• (at a party) Hi, Lary. Are you enjoying the party?
• What is all that noise? What are you watching?
• They are not working today. It’s Sunday.
c. The action doesn’t always happen at the time of
speaking. For example:
