STEAM POWERPLANT

INTRODUCTION
Uses heat energy generated from
burning coal to produce electrical
energy.
Prime mover is steam driven
Converts the chemical energy of the fossil fuel (Coal)
into mechanical energy/electrical energy.
This is done by raising the steam in the boilers,
expanding it through the turbines and coupling the
turbines to the generators which converts mechanical
energy to electrical energy.
PURPOSE
2. To produce steam for industrial
1. To produce electric power processes like textile, food
manufacturers, paper mills etc.
USES RANKINE CYCLE

LAYOUT OF STEAM POWERPLANT
STAGES OF STEAM POWERPLANT
 Coal and ash handling
 Steam generating
 Steam turbine
 Alternator/Generator
 Feed water
 Cooling arrangement
COAL AND ASH HANDLING

1. Coal is transported to power station by rail or road and stored in coal

storage plant and then pulverised
2. Pulverised coal is fed to fed to the boiler by belt conveyers
3. Coal gets burned in the boiler and ash produced is removed to the
ash handling plant and then delivered to ash storage plant for
disposal
STEAM GENERATING

BOILER : The heat of combustion in the boiler is utilized to

convert water into steam at high temperature and pressure
STEAM TURBINE

1. Dry and superheated steam from superheater is fed to the steam turbine.
2. The heat energy of steam when passing over the blades of turbine is
converted into mechanical energy.
3. After giving energy to the turbine, the steam is exhausted to the condenser
which condenses the exhausted steam by means of cold water circulation
ALTERNATOR/GENERATOR

1. Steam turbine is coupled to an alternator which converts the

mechanical energy to electrical energy
2. The electrical output of the alternator is delivered to the bus bars
through transformer, circuit breakers and isolators
FEEDWATER

1. The condensate from the condenser is used as feed water to the boiler.
2. The feed water on its way to boiler gets heated up by water heaters and
economizer.
3. This helps to improve the overall efficiency of the plant
COOLING ARRANGEMENT

1. Condenser condenses the steam exhausted from the turbine

2. Water is drawn from natural sources like river, lake, canals
3. Circulating water takes up the heat and itself gets heated up
4. This hot water can be discharged away or used again by using a cooling tower
PROS AND CONS
ADVANTAGES DISADVANTAGES
 Cheap coal is used X Cost more to run compared
 Can be installed anywhere with other types of
near fuel and water supply powerplant
 Require less construction X Transportation of fuel is
space major problem
 Cost for generation is less X Air pollution is major
 Initial investment is low problem
 Commissioning requires less X Coal may be exhausted by
period of time gradual use
