KOLEJ KOMUNITI KEPALA BATAS – MINISTRY OF HIGHER EDUCATION

Learning objectives
At the end of this topic, you will be able to:

 State the basic element of model structure.

 Know the basic modeling techniques.

 Use primitive objects to create 3D model.

 Group the geometry objects being used in a model.

 Save and render the final model.

Model Structure
Elements
 3D object consists of the combinations of vertex, edge, and
face.

 Vertex is the smallest element, consist of a small dot.

 Edge is the combination of 2 vertex.

 Face is the combination of 3 vertex.

 Element / Segment is the combination of many vertex to

form a complex object.
Model Structure
 Object is the compilation of elements / segments to form a
proper 3D objects.
Model Structure
Modeling techniques
Primitives

 Technique of creating 3D model by using basic geometrical

shapes called as primitive objects.

 Ex : Box, cylinder, tube, cone, sphere, torus, hadra, teapot,

geosphere and plane.

 Object can be modified by using certain operation such as

Boolean operation.

Modeling techniques
2D Shapes

 Technique of creating 3D model by using 2D shapes

(Spline).

 Ex : Line, rectangle, Ngon, star, circle, arc, ellipse, donut,

helix and text.

 The 2D shapes can be manipulated by using shape

modifiers to form 3D objects.

Polygon Modeling

 Technique of creating 3D model with the manipulation of

vertex on the geometrical object.
Modeling techniques
Patch Modeling

 Technique of creating 3D model with the manipulation of

elements in a surface called as lattice.

 Lattice is the grid lines which have control over the vertices.

Patch Modeling
Modeling techniques
NURBS

 Non-Uniform Rational Basis Spline (NURBS).

 Technique of creating 3D model with the combination of few

lines called as NURBS Curves to form a plane and smooth
surfaces.

Conclusion
3D object = combinations of vertex, edge, face.

Five common techniques to create 3D model is:

1. Primitives
2. 2D Shapes
3. Polygon modeling
4. Patch modeling
5. NURBS

Instruction
By using any geometrical 3D objects in standard primitive (Command Panels > Create
Panels > Geometry Tools), you have to create a 3D robot model. Based on you
creativity, you may use any geometry objects to create your model at any size. Follow
the instruction below:
4. Create a 3D robot model.
5. Render your final 3D model into .jpeg file format and name it as robot.jpeg.
6. Print out your robot.jpeg file (color) on a piece of paper (A4 size) and glue it on a thick
paper.
7. Give name to you 3D robot model.
8. You have to present your 3D model individually.
9. During your presentation, specify types of geometrical objects you used in creating the
model.
10.Please return this paper to your lecturer during presentation day.

Presentation : 31 July 2008 (Thursday)
