Bandwidth-Variable Transceivers based on Four Dimensional

Modulations
Background
Broadband Technologies :
types….

• Software-defined optical Networks (SDONs) :

is a paradigm separates the data plane from the control plane and centralized
networking control in an SDN controller.

• elastic optical networking (EON)

is the combination of adaptive transceivers and flexible grid .
Introduction
Bandwidth Variable Transceivers (BVT)

• BVT are a key enabling technology for EON and SDN

• Why we are using BVT :

BVT Operate flexible wavelength .

BVT enable the software controlled adaptation of physical layer parameters.

Four Dimensional Modulation Format
Simulations
• Definitions

• Constellation constrained capacity is a measure of the maximum capacity

achievable by a specific modulations format.

• Constellation constrained capacity for an additive white Gaussian noise

(AWGN) channel is determined by calculating the mutual information
between transmitted and received symbols.
Four Dimensional Modulation Format Simulations
Constellation Constrained Capacity Model
• Constellation constrained capacity
simulation as a function of SNR per symbol.

• Observations:
Coded system have penalty with respect to
constellation capacity.
For example, PS-QPSK and 6Po1sk-QPSK
formats using bit-interleaving.

 SNR is the signal average power average divided by the AWGN power per
symbol
Four Dimensional Modulation Format
Simulations
Constellation Constrained Capacity Model
• BER as a function of SNR per symbol for an
AWGN same as in previous simulations.
• Observations:
• Significantly improve the sensitivity at low BERs.
• For instance, BER of 5 x 10-5 the PS-QPSK format
shows almost same sensitivity as PDM-BOSK
although it encodes one more bit per symbol.
• Compared to PDM-mQAM format, the
performance degrade with decreasing SNR.
Four Dimensional Modulation Format Simulations
Constellation Constrained Capacity Model

• Reach as a function of power

spectral density at BER = 10-3 an
AWGN.

• Observations:
the GN model provides a good
estimate of the reach.
