 Types of Paragraphs
• In this course we will practice how to write
different types of paragraphs:
• Argumentative (for reviews and points of view
based on what you think and feel)
• Contrast (for showing how ideas or contents
oppose each other).
• Cause and effect (for indicating what facts
result in others, or what is caused by others)
CONNECTORS OR LINKING WORDS
• Here we have some of the most important
CONNECTORS or LINKING WORDS and
expressions that will help you write your
paragraph coherently

 CONTRAST

• -Although (aunque),
• Although the previous point is ….,
• Although this argument may be true, …..
• -However (sin embargo)
• -But (pero, si no)
• -Despite this fact, …. (a pesar de este hecho, ….)
• -On the other hand …. (por otro lado…)
 NOTE
• Ojo cuando usen “On the other hand”, muchas personas lo
usan erroneamente para agregar informacion de la misma
clase. Este conector es para mostrar iformacion OPUESTA a
la previamente presentada.
• Ejemplo
• Incorrecto : Gloria es alta. Por otro lado, ella es rubia. ¨ Aqui
no hay oposición de ideas, por eso es incorrecto.

• Correcto : Gloria es alta. Por otro lado, no es tan alta como

Maria. Aqui sí hay oposicion de ideas, actuando como otra
forma de decir PERO.
 CAUSE AND EFFECT

• - As a result (como resultado), As a result of…. (como

resultado de…), as a consequence, as a consequence
of this….
• -This/that is caused by…. (esto, eso es causado por…)
• - Because (porque), because of (debido a)
• -Due to the the fact that… (debido al hecho de que…)
• -Then (entonces)
 OTHER CONNECTORS

 CONCLUSION
• As a conclusion…. (como conclusión)
• -According to what has been explained
above… (de acuerdo con lo que ha sido
explicado arriba…),
• Based on the previous arguments, we can
conclude that…. (basados en los argumentos
anteriores, podemos concluir que …)

 ADDITION
• -and (y)
• -besides (además, además de)
• - in addition, (a demás) in addition to this (a
demás de esto…)
• -Furthermore / Moreover (mas aún, es mas)
• example: Carmen can swim very well.
Furthermore/Moreover, she can run for hours
 NOTE 2
• For writing ARGUMENTATIVE PARAGRAPHS
you can use a mixture of connectors that you
think are the best, because these paragraphs
will reflect what you think about something.
