are of great importance as
they may be used to
detectaand characterize a
ship or sub-marine.

The field thus produced

Prediction
Naval Science & Technological Laboratory, Vizag

Importance:

In order to protect the ships against the mines it is

necessary to reduce the signature below certain level
which a mine can detect. To reduce the signature, first
we should know the signature of our own ship. So
Prediction is necessary.

Modeling Techniques
Naval Science & Technological Laboratory, Vizag

Various modeling techniques are being

used for Signature prediction. They are

• Empirical
• Data Models
• Numerical methods
– Finite Difference Method
– Boundary Element Method

The Electric Signatures of a Ship

depends on the following parameters:

 Full vessel geometry of the wetted surfaces.

 The material electrochemical properties.
 Sacrificial anode corrosion protection systems
 ICCP systems
 The depth of vessel
 The sea depth and seabed profile.
 The electrical conductivities of seawater and sea bed.

PREDICTION SOFTWARE- TUB MODEL
Naval Science & Technological Laboratory, Vizag

 It is a software used for predicting the potential

values that are to be obtained in the conducting
medium.

 The dimensions of the tub are taken and modeled by

using this software.

 To calculate the potential ,we have given different

inputs like material properties, conductivity and the
point at which the potential to be calculated.

 Then input current is given to electrode, to calculate

the potential at which, point is given as input.

Values obtained in software:
Measurement at lab:
Naval Science & Technological Laboratory, Vizag

 Tub model setup is established in lab, as simulated in

software.
 Tub is filled with simulated water whose conductivity is
equal to the sea water that is 4siemens/ mts.
 The procedure of the experiment is as below:
- Current is passed through the electrodes to
the sea water and flow of electrons will happen which
acts as electrolysis process.
- The field generated by this process is sensed
by the sensor and the sensed field is given as the input
to the amplifier
- Amplifier amplifies the received signal and its
output is given to the Nano voltmeter

Instrumentation amplifier – AD620
Naval Science & Technological Laboratory, Vizag

 The amplifier used is the instrumentation amplifier

with the model no AD620.

 AD620 has excellent DC performance:

- 50µV max input offset voltage
- 100dB min common mode rejection
ratio(G=10)

 LOW NOISE :
9 nV/√Hz, @ 1 kHz, Input Voltage Noise
0.28 mV p-p Noise (0.1 Hz to 10 Hz)

Comparision:
Naval Science & Technological Laboratory, Vizag

 Simulated and measured values are compared and

mismatch between the values are observed.

 Hence, tub model is rechecked for debugs and

predicted the following reasons as some causes:

- taking the electrodes as point sources in

prediction.

- conductivity of simulated salt water in lab

model.

25/15
25/18
Naval Science & Technological Laboratory, Vizag

 In prediction software, again the tub is modeled by

taking the electrodes as patching parts.

 Conductivity of the salt water simulated in lab model

is measured by using the sensor named CTD SENSOR
which measures the conductivity, temperature and
depth .

 By using this sensor, it was found that the

conductivity of the salt water simulated is
5.4 Siemens/mt instead 4 Siemens/mt.

 Again tub simulated by taking the conductivity of 5.4

Siemens/mt in the software.

 The predicted values are again compared with

measured values and observed that they are not
equal.

 Then assumed that if the distance between the

electrodes increased then there might be a change
in the values of the potentials obtained

 New tub is modeled and simulated by using the

software and the tub model is as below:

 salt is added as per calculation to reach the

conductivity of sea in terms of half, 3/4th and then
completely to reach the conductivity of the sea.

 Then current is passed through the electrodes and

potentials are generated in the water and these are
sensed by the sensor placed in water

 The output of the sensor is given to the

preamplifier and then preamplifier output is
given to the scope.

 Then potentials are measured and are

 Again predicted values are compared with measure

values and obtained no relation between them.

 Again rechecked the model for debugs and assuming

that units of the system are also one of the causes
for the prediction.

 Now, I m again doing the model in software by

taking the correct units for prediction.
