PURPOSE

The purpose of this orientation


course is to establish the minimum
guidelines on how to carry out bolt
torquing and tensioning.

To provide the uniform gasket


compression , essential for the
integrity of critical bolted
connection.

REQUIREMENTS
GENERAL REQUIREMENTS

Torque values vary according to flange rating, bolt size,


type of gasket & friction factor of the thread lubricant.
Bolt Tightening shall be in accordance with SHJ-CS-GDE-X-11790
The manufacturer’s instruction shall be followed for the operation,
limitation &maintenance of all torque wrench used to performed
in accordance with manufacturer’s recommendations or as
required in specification.

REQUIREMENTS
B. RESPONSIBILITIES

The QC Inspector performs the required inspection before and after


tightening activities and shall assure tightening activities and shall
assure that correct values and method are being used, properly
documented in accordance to JAL & Saudi Aramco Standards.

FOGs shall have to assign a crew/group to prepare & set up, update the
calibration of all tools & equipments prior to tightening activities. All
personnel involved in this activity shall show proof of training &
competency in the used of the equipment & tightening procedure.
Personnel certification will be required to use of special equipment.

B.RESPONSIBILITIES
The Crew/group must have to present the latest calibration
certificate of the tools & equipment to be used to QC Inspector
assigned to verify the calibration settings or torque value
required prior to perform bolt tightening activities.

D.METHODS
BOLT TIGHTENING PROCEDURE
All bolts, nuts & washer shall be as per approved
drawing & visually checked for proper size, dimension &
for any physical damage to shank or threads which would
interfere with bolt assembly
or performance.

Check/verify the gasket as per approved
drawing for type, rating, dimension,
compatibility with flange facing & free of
any damages particularly in seating area.

METHODS

Only approved thread lubricant should be used


to lubricate the threaded components. This
includes the threads of bolt, nut, bearing surface
of nut & washers if any. Lubricant shall be as per
FPI Recommendation

Ensure that the nuts run freely down the thread


of the stud. Apply lubricant to stud’s threads over
length & nut engagement & to face of nut that
contact with the flange.

Install all studs & nuts hand-tight. Position the
nut on one end of the stud such that only the crown
of the stud projects beyond face of nut. Excess stud
length should projects beyond other side whichever
has the better maintenance access.

Number each stud according to each position in


the flange. As per figure SAEP-351-01, stud bolt
tightening sequence.

MANUAL TORQUING PROCEDURE


TWO STAGES OF TORQUE VALUE APPLICATION

1st stage, 30 % OF TOTAL TORQUE VALUE


2nd stage, 100 % OF TOTAL TORQUE VALUE

Tighten studs as per sequence with an


appropriate torque wrench.

Tighten the stud bolts in stages to obtained the


final required torque from torque table ;

The first stage should not be more than 30% of the final
torque.

The final torque shall be within ± 5% of the required to


torque value.

Apply the torque evenly to each stud by following the stud


bolt tightening sequence & mark with the applicable color YOU
