INTRODUCTION
The term Horticulture is derived from two latin words
i.e. Hortus means garden or enclosure and culture
means cultivation

So, horticulture literally means garden culture or


culture of garden crops. The term agriculture refers
broadly to the technology of raising plants as per the
environmental changes. On the other hand
horticulture which is a part of agriculture is
concerned with the raising of so called garden crops.
Branches Of Horticulture And Special
Horticultural Operations
i. Pomology : It deals with the scientific study of fruit crops (Fig. 1.2).
ii. Olericulture : It deals with the scientific study of vegetable crops
(Fig, 1.3).
iii. Floriculture : It deals with the scientific study of flowering and
ornamental crops (Fig, (1.4).
iv. Viticulture : It is the cultivation and harvesting of grapes.
v. Post-harvest technology : It deals with the principles and practices
of handling packing and processing of harvested crops increase
their storage life and availability.

Contribution to GDP
 Horticulture has increased in 33% compares to previous decade/
last 10 years.
 The production of horticulture crops was about 283.5 million
tons from an area of 24.2 million hectare (2015-16).
out of six categories Eg(fruits, Vegetables, flowers, Spices,
Aromatic plants & Plantation crops).
 In the year 2016-17 it increased in production of crops was
about 300 million tons from an area of 24.5 million hectare.
 In 2017-18 The production increased in 305 million tons in the
area of 24.9 million hectare.
 According to union budget 2018 had said that horticulture is
contributing 17-18% to the countries GDP.
 Horticulture accounts in 30% of India’s agricultural GDP from
8.5% of cropped areas.
Market sector of Horticulture
 India is the second largest producer of horticultural crops
and fruits in the world.
 After china India is the second largest producer of
horticultural crops and fruits.
 A production of 30 crore in metric ton horticulture crops on
2.5 crore hectares land is expected during 2016-17
 The terms of area in India the citrus fruits hold second
position(10.37 Lakh hectare) and third (12million tones) in
production.
 ICAR is implementing all India coordinated fruits crop
research project In 10 centers within 8 states (Maharashtra,
Punjab, TamilNadu, Rajasthan, Assam, Andhra Pradesh,
Arunachal Pradesh and Karnataka).
CONCLUSION
 In the world economy, the horticulture crops are very
important in the high nutritional value supply of
human life.
 The share of horticulture has also increased in the
Agriculture GDP.
 It should focus on the high-yielding varieties adapted
to different agroecological Zones;
 Compared to normal agriculture practices
horticulture type agriculture practices fetches more
income to farmers and also tends in increase in
exports of the product and also increase in National
income and GDP.
