WONDER AND SCIENCE
In the book “Iris Exiled: A Synoptic History of Wonder” by Dennis Quinn. An excellent book
about wonder through history
Quinn examines the subject in relation to various disciplines and modes of discourse-
philosophy, theology, poetry, art myth, history, rhetoric, psychology, education, and
modern science.
The wonder, originally seen as the principle of philosophy and poetry and as a passion
essential to the highest order of education, has been weakened by certain intellectual,
cultural, and religious shifts during the past 600 years.

THE WONDER APPROACH VS. THE BEHAVIORIST APPROACH

• According to the behaviorist approach, education would be reduced to

“bombarding with information” (the more the better)
• Training in habits as mere mechanical repetition of actions.
• The Behaviorist Approach emphasizes the accumulation of information
(knowledge), on external behaviors (skills and mechanical habits).

HOW TO USE WONDER
• According to the Wonder Approach, learning would start from within;
• It would be an inner personal “desire”.
• The environment would be important, but the environment would not
be per se what makes the student learn.
• And so it follows that “more” would not necessarily be better.
