Human Trafficking?
• Human trafficking is a crime against humanity.
It involves an act of recruiting, transporting,
transfering, harbouring or receiving a person
through a use of force, coercion or other
means, for the purpose of exploiting them
• It is the illegal trade in human beings for the
purposes of commercial sexual
exploitation or forced labor.
Human Trafficking = Slavery
• Human Trafficking is a modern-day form
of slavery
• It is the fastest growing criminal industry in the
world, and tied with the illegal arms industry as
the second largest, after the drug-trade.
• Every year, thousands of men, women and
children fall into the hands of traffickers, in their
own countries and abroad. Every country in the
world is affected by trafficking, whether as a
country of origin, transit or destination for
victims.
Elements Of Human Trafficking
• The Act (What is done): Recruitment, transportation,
transfer, harbouring or receipt of persons
• The Means (How it is done): Threat or use of force,
coercion, abduction, fraud, deception, abuse of power
or vulnerability, or giving payments or benefits to a
person in control of the victim
• The Purpose (Why it is done): For the purpose of
exploitation, which includes exploiting the prostitution
of others, sexual exploitation, forced labour, slavery or
similar practices and the removal of organs.

• Human Trafficking Is Often Run By Organized
Crime
• The average cost of a slave around the world
is $90.
• According to some estimates, approximately
80% of trafficking involves sexual exploitation,
and 19% involves labor exploitation.
• It is estimated that there are approximately 27
million slaves around the world.
• According To Interpol, Over 30,000 Young
Women Are Missing In Romania
• Between 2001 and 2005, 140 defendants have
been convicted of human trafficking in the
U.S. which is a 109% increase from 1996-2000.
• There Are An Estimated 200,000 Young
Women And Children From Nepal Being Held
Prisoners In Brothels In India At This Moment
• A Relatively Large Percentage Of Young
Women And Children That Are Trafficked For
Sexual Exploitation Will Become HIV Positive
Trafficking Protocol
• The Protocol to Prevent, Suppress and Punish
Trafficking in Persons, especially Women and Children,
was adopted by General Assembly resolution 55/25. It
entered into force on 25 December 2003.
• It is the first global legally binding instrument with an
agreed definition on trafficking in persons. The
intention behind this definition is to facilitate
convergence in national approaches with regard to the
establishment of domestic criminal offences that
would support efficient international cooperation in
investigating and prosecuting trafficking in persons
cases.
