IT management is evolving

• Organization and people: from command & control

functional silos to self-regulated product teams

• Information and technology: from monolithic in-house

solutions, to clouds and everything as a service, and
then to in-house development based on outsourced
cloud platforms

• Value stream and processes: from rigid processes to

flexible complexity-aware heuristics; from
bureaucracy and segregation to lean and agile value
streams; from optimisation for costs to optimization
for speed

• Partners and suppliers: from outsourcing to multi-

sourcing and service integration.

Key elements of the model

• Value Streams

• Functional Components

• Service Lifecycle Data Objects

(key data objects)
• Service Model Backbone Data Objects
(service backbone data objects)

• Relationships

In (relatively) plain words…

• Functional component is a software building block.

The smallest unit of technology … that can stand on its own and be useful as a whole to an IT
practitioner (or IT service provider)

• Data object is data or records produced and/or consumed to advance or control the service
model as it progresses through its lifecycle phases. Data objects … are produced, consumed, or
modified by functional components

• Relationships are the connections between (or interactions with) data objects

Essentially, it is a high-level information model
defining functional components of an integrated IT
management toolset, key data objects, and integration
of them operated within and by such a toolset.

The information model is focused exclusively on the

data objects that are mandatory for ensuring end-to-
end traceability of the service operationally and/or
financially.

ITIL provides a business process model for IT IT4IT provides a data architecture model for IT
service management: a set of processes and service management: a set of data objects to
functions to manage services through their manage services through their lifecycle
lifecycle

11
There are architectures and architectures…

• Service organization has its enterprise architecture. IT4IT model is specifically intended to
support creation and management of this architecture.

• Service organization is responsible for managing services and needs to understand service
architectures(s). IT4IT model is not designed to manage these architectures.

• Hence, the primary area of application for IT4IT is establishment, management and
improvement of the IT service management system, rather than individual IT services.
It helps to integrate and optimize ITSM processes, tools and information flows.

• It means that EVERY ITSM process is highly likely to benefit from IT4IT, if Service Strategy
management is good enough to ensure holistic and rational approach to ITSM automation and
information management.

12
IT4IT is for you, if…

• You design and manage a service management system

• You design , develop and improve a service management tool
• You need to integrate your management system(s) and tool(s) with those of your partners,
suppliers or customers

It is also useful, if you…

• You are a process owner or manager
• You are a service or product owner
• You are generally interested in how ITSM system works
