THE CIRCULATORY SYSTEM

( UNIT 4)
The heart
External structure of mammalian heart
Internal structure of mammalian heart
CARDIAC CYCLE
Atrial systole (contraction of the
atria)
Ventricular systole (contraction
of the ventricles)
Diastole (relaxation of the
heart)
Summary test
In humans the cardiac cycle repeats itself
about (1) times each minute when the heart
is at rest. The phase of the cycle when the
atria and ventricles are relaxed is called (2).
When the atria contract during the phase
called (3), the remaining blood in them is
pushed past the (4) valves into the
chambers called (5). Contraction of these
chambers forces open the (6) valves and
pushes blood into the (7), which then goes
to the lungs, and the (8), which supplies
blood to the rest of the body.
