CIVIL ENGINEERING IN ANCIENT ROME
Roman civil engineering has been and watched for generations over the centuries, Some of
his inventions are however, improve ments based on ideas or older inventions.
Civil engineering was one of the basic pillars on which the roman empire was built. Although
the tracks were common, humans improved their desing and perfected their construction in a
wery that lasted many centuries and some sections are in Good condition.

Materials used
The Stone: from an autocton character in the VI century a.C. the tufo was used in the
cimentos of the temples.

Clay: used for the construction of bricks and shingles for which woud molds were used.
Mortar was a mixture of sand, lime and wáter, with which the bricks were joined being an
essential element in the construct of bovedas.

Wood: used for carpentry work, for the construction of the skeleton of buildings and the
armazon of the roots.

Communication routes
Road: The cities were interconnected by roads that were built by digging a trench and filling it
with stones of different thicknesses until leveling the terrain, and covering with a last layer with
coated with fine grain material.

Puents: The bridges arise as a secondary but essential element of the communication routes.
That is, bridges are not the ultimate goal, which is the transport of people and goods, but their
construction is fundamental to achieving this goal.

Ports: For the Roman Empire, whose growth and expansion took place around the
Mediterranean, the sea was a fundamental communication path.
