The Sacrament of Matrimony

Matrimony is the sacrament by which a man and a
woman unite themselves before God to found a
Christian family. It is a public statement of a manand
woman that they have entered a relationship of deep
and fulfillment and bring up new life to responsible
adulthood
Biblical Foundation
“For this reason a man shall leave his father and mother
and cling to his wife and the two shall become as one, thus
they are no longer two but one flesh. Therefore, let no man
separate what God has joined”(Mt 19:5-6). “God created
man in His image: male and female He created them. He
blessed them saying: “Be fertile and multiply, fill the world
subdue it” (Gen 1:7)
Two basic ends in Genesis:
Procreation - Propagating human race
Union - The two are called to become one body in
intimate equal partnership of life and love
Marriage as “Covenant Love”

Marriage is a unique sacrament in that it is built into the

very nature of our human reality as: created male and
female, through God's love in the image of God who is love
and called to a covenant of loving one another, in sharing
God's own divine love (CFC 1996).
Marriage is a Sacrament of Crist's love for his people
Marriage between Christians is a saving symbolic act of
love; grounded in Christ's ministry and continued in, by and
for the Church. Which, when celebrated in faith, fashions
the married couple into the likeness of Christ by making
them actually share in God's own love and faithfullness
through the power of the Holy

Effects

It increases sanctifying grace and confers a special help of

God for husband and wife to love each other faithfully, to
bear each other’s faults, to bring up their children properly,
and to cooperate in the sanctification of other souls
especiall those of the other members of their household and
other families with whom they have close ties of friendship.
Three Qualities of Marriage

Unity – One man is united to one woman

Fidelity – It means that both parties keep the promise of
marriage by reserving their love entirely and exclusively for
the other.
Indissolubility – The marriage bond cannot be dissolved
until the death of one of the spouses
Three Goods of Marriage

Offspring – Children are blessing from God and an essential

element of married life.
Sacrament – It is a “sacred sign” which expresses and
shares in the mystery of our union with God in Christ.
Fidelity – It is living expression of God’s fidelity to His
people so the couple should do the same for each other.`
