Do not concentrate on getting Scholarship, Concentrate on being a

genuine artist!
Communication is:

purpose behind everything through experimental
you do processes in order to
✘ That there are connections address a problem
between things ✘ Explaining your
✘ That you are thinking about processes and story
how your work operates ✘ That conventions and

✘ That you develop strategies overall proposal or client
for overcoming problems or
addressing needs

What are some of things I should show?
Communicate the following

Scholarship
Identifies a range of options in relation to key concepts and
explores these through logical and investigative means.
Presents a coherent enquiry that utilises reflective and questioning
strategies to consolidate ideas and identify opportunities for
development

Outstanding Scholarship:
Independently evolves critical and practical strategies, lateral
approaches and imaginative responses to expand the central
proposition
Takes ownership of the enquiry and is open to discovery through
interpretive methods of evaluation, analysis, reflection and
synthesis.

Communication: Purposeful Intent, Process and Outcome
What to Show: Communicating

Communicating that what you are doing/

making/ exploring has purpose and is
somehow related to your overall ideas
What to Show: Communicating

refine edit select expand

Communication is…..

● Showing that there purpose to everything you do ● That you have undergone experimental processes
● That there are connections between things to address a defined problem
● That you explain decisions and themes and their ● Explaining your story and process
relevance to your overall idea. ● That conventions and media are relevant to
proposal or client

Communication Tasks
Task 1: In 2-3 sentences write a brief explanation of the aim or vision of your work.
Task 2: Draw a visual analogy of your artistic process. This could be a diagram or picture. Put your
work up on the wall.
Task 3: Underneath the first task list all the conventions and sub-themes you can think of.

What to Show: Analysis

That you thought about your work

and made decisions based on critical
analysis.
Synthesis: Bringing influences together to make new ideas
What to Show: Synthesis

That you bring different ideas

together to form new ideas
Synthesis is:

● Combining a range of influences together to ● Explaining connections between things through

form new ideas arrows and visual pairings
● To create connections between previously ● Investigating a range of possible influences
unrelated things in order to create new ideas ● Not limiting your ideas of a certain field but being
● Actively seeking out and exploring potential open to new ways of thinking
influences

Synthesis Tasks
Task 1: List all the different influences your artist has used in their work
Task 2: List all the influences you have in your work
Task 3: List all the potential influences you could bring into your work
✘ Analysis: Showing Critical Thinking
Analysis = Critical Thinking= Reflecting upon things
Analysis Tips
● Have a reflective practice
● Get feedback

The Beginning
Aim of Page One
To explain your preliminary thinking about how you selected your theme or client.

Design Photography & Painting

How and why you chose your client How and why you chose your theme
What is your client's vision and how could What is your personal connection to the theme
How could you visually explore this theme
you visually achieve this
Proposal for Scholarship
Visual Research: Establishing Conventions.
Collect a range of visuals that relate to your selected idea. This could be images you have taken yourself,
family photographs, Google images and from books. Explore the visual elements of your selected idea.

Imagery can include, textures, words, photos, colours, photocopies, collage, sketching etc.

Collate all this information on 1xA3 page. For 60% of the images write down why you
have selected them i.e what appeals to you and how is it relevant to your idea.

Personal Approach: A focus on the personal reasons behind selecting her client.
Relating the idea to her personal history and emotional relationship to a place

“With my campaign I want to convey a
colourful mood, lighter than other cancer
events, more abou the children and what
they like than the sickness”

“Layering/ mixing urban skateboarding with

the concept of cancer is a diverse mix, but
the message can be shown through
layering of relevant objects such as
bandaids etc”

Initial Thoughts: This exemplar shows clear and critical initial thoughts. A
clear description of what they want to achieve is provided

Client Focused: This exemplar gives a formal explanation of who the client is
and what the student hopes to achieve. There is not much personal investment

“I wanted my board to be my attempt at
describing this relationship to others within
a context of the modern world and how the
land and people are together evolving”

Personal Focus: A fantastic description of the student's personal history and why
she has chosen this theme. Her artwork will be part of her and will define her.

Bulking Up: The initially simple theme is built up and explained in-depth
Definitions: A concise definition of the theme and then the plan for the folio
Brainstorming and Research: This exemplar shows lots of initial thinking and
research. Its focus is thinking around the theme rather than directly explaining
Page One Process

1. Read over templates then add any notes in the boxes.

2. Look through your workbook and photocopy/ type up any bits that would
be good for page one.
3. Create the page and submit for feedback.

RESEARCH
Page Two Summary
Show your initial research and/or experimentation. Page 2 is a ‘bulking up’ of
page one

Key things you could show on page 2:

Artist models incl ones outside of your chosen field

Initial experimentation or testing

Further background research into your theme

What goes on Page Two?
Broad research

Inspirations

Contextual research
What were some of the first things
you researched?

What were some some things you

initially looked into and why?
Why?
Show Synthesis

Show Contextual awareness

Contextual Awareness??
Show that before getting stuck in you Contexts can include:
thought around your theme or client. Personal contexts
Show that you tried to understand the i.e exploring things your are personally interested
in that might be relevant to your idea
issues that surrounded your ideas
and then selected an appropriate Art Contexts
direction. i.e exploring a range of relevant artistic influences
especially in other mediums such as film,
literature etc

Societal Contexts
i.e exploring things in soceity that might be
relevant to your ideas
Page 2 Steps
Reflect on your initial research and experimentation

Identify parts of the above that would be worth showing to the markers

Write the page 2 draft

This student is
designing for an
atomic exhibition at
the museum

She has explored

some relevant
historical research
on her 2nd page.
This painting
folio uses the
2nd page to
explore some
broad artist
models. They
discuss some
of their initial
ideas and
relate them to
their first

This
photography
folio uses the
2nd page to
outline some
of her initial
inspirations.
She discusses
how these

This student
decided to use page
2 to start talking
about all her ideas
for panel one. She
shows some series
of photos that she
did not include on
her folio and
relevant artist
models
This design
student has
shown a range of
initial
explorations in
typography,
photography and
initial drawings
