The Middle East and North Africa accounted for 38 per cent of new
displacements associated with conflict and violence worldwide in 2017,
with almost 4.5 million recorded. New displacement in the region was
concentrated in Iraq, Syria and Yemen, all of which the UN classified as
L3 emergencies. 87 The three countries also figure among the ten with
the largest stock figures globally, accounting between them for 11.4
million people living in displacement as of the end of 2017. Syria and
Iraq had the first and fourth-highest figures at almost 6.8 million and 2.7
million respectively, and Yemen the sixth-highest at 2 million.
WHAT IS THE ISLAMIC STATE?
An Islamic state is a form of government based on Islamic law. As a
term, it has been used to describe various historical polities and theories
of governance in the Islamic world.
ISIS (Islamic State of Iraq and Syria), also known as ISIL (Islamic State of
Iraq and the Levant), is a Sunni jihadist group with a particularly violent
ideology that calls itself a caliphate and claims religious authority over
all Muslims.Today, many Muslim countries have incorporated Islamic law, wholly
or in part, into their legal systems. Certain Muslim states have declared Islam to
be their state religion in their constitutions, but do not apply Islamic law in their
courts. Islamic states which are not Islamic monarchies are usually referred to as
Islamic republics.
What is and what does the Islamic State want?
Wars have also been a constant in recent decades for this country,
which became independent from the United Kingdom in 1932. The
last armed conflict erupted in 2014, causing massive displacement
never before seen in Iraq .
The Islamic State's occupation of the city of Mosul and the subsequent
government Army counteroffensive have caused more than three million
people to be displaced from their homes. At the end of 2017, the Islamic
State was practically defeated and the levels of violence have decreased
substantially.
Syria
The war that started in 2015 in Yemen has caused what for many is
already the worst humanitarian catastrophe of our time. 22 million
people are in need of humanitarian aid and cholera has spread
throughout the country, affecting more than a million people.
The border closure imposed in 2017 has caused the price of food to
double and 8 million people could starve if the situation
persists. Malnutrition has particularly affected minors, and it is
estimated that every 10 minutes a child dies of hunger in the country.
WHATS IS THE ISLAMIC LAW?
Sharia, or sharia law, is the Islamic legal system derived from the
religious precepts of Islam, particularly the Quran and the Hadith.
The term sharia comes from the Arabic
language term sharīʿah, Arabic: ةOعOيOشر which means a body
of moral and religious law derived from religious prophecy, as
opposed to human legislation.
Sharia deals with many topics, including crime, politics,
and economics, as well as personal matters such as sexual
intercourse, hygiene, diet, prayer, everyday etiquette
and fasting. Adherence to sharia has served as one of the
distinguishing characteristics of the Muslim faith historically. In
its strictest and most historically coherent definition, sharia is
considered in Islam as the infallible law of God.
What's happening in Syria?
There's been a civil war in Syria for the last eight years, with
different groups trying to seize control of the country.
The fighting has been between:
Soldiers who support the Syrian president Bashar al-Assad
Fighters known as rebels, who don't want Assad to be in power anymore
The group that calls itself Islamic State (IS)
WHERE IS THIS COUNTRY?
In the chaos of fighting between the government and anti-government
fighters, IS took over large parts of Iraq and then moved into eastern Syria,
where they were able to gain land and power.
By March 2019, IS had lost control of all the land they once occupied. More
than 12,000 suspected IS members are now being held by Kurdish forces.
The situation is very complicated because other countries have got involved
in the conflict.
The Syrian government's key supporters are Russia and Iran, while the US,
Turkey and Saudi Arabia backed the rebels. The UK, France and other western
countries have also provided varying levels of support to what they consider
to be "moderate" rebels.
Fighting continues. Recently, the US removed troops from north-east of the
country, which gave way for
Turkey to launch a military attack against Kurdish-forces in northern
Syria.
According to the United Nations (UN) - a group of countries working together
to try to bring peace - at least 6.2 million ordinary people have had to leave
their homes inside Syria, while another 5.6 million have left to go abroad.
Why did the fighting in Syria first begin?
