Sample Size
Questions:
1. What is sample size?
2. How large should a sample be?
3. Why it is important to determine
the correct sample size in your
research?
4. What is the formula used in
finding sample size for a
population mean?
Inadequate, or excessive
sample influence the quality and
accuracy of research.
Sample Size refers to the
number of items to be selected
from the population to constitute
a sample.
If the sample size is too small,
it may not serve to achieve the
objectives.
Too large sample size might
cause huge cost.
How large or small should be
the sample size?
As general rule, the sample
must be of an optimum size.
Optimum means the ideal
sample provides the most
precision for the least cost.
When we consider sample size,
there are two things to consider:
confidence and the narrowness
of the interval. Recall that the
computing formula in
determining sample size is
derived from the formula of the
margin of error E.
Activity 3:
Bring Back Memories!
Directions: Group the students
into 4. Derive the formula of
sample size using the formula of
margin of Error. Fill in the
correct answer. Then present
your answer to the group.

From the formula, is called margin of

error.
What are the terms in the formula?

Thus, the formula in determining the

minimum sample needed when estimating the
population mean is

w
= z-value based from confidence level

E= margin of error

2. Anthony wants to estimate the
mean weight , in kilograms, of all
Grade 1 pupils in an elementary
school. He wants to be 99% confident
that the estimate of is accurate to
within 0.05 kg. From a previous
study, the standard deviation of the
weights of the target population was
0.5kg. What sample size does he
need?

3. Maria wants to study the
eating habits of an indigenous
tribe. She wants to estimate the
population mean , to within an
error of 0.02 of its true value.
Previous studies have revealed a
standard deviation of 0.3. Using
95% confidence level, find the
sample size n that she needs.
Activity 5: Riddle
Valentines Day is a holiday when lovers
express their affection with greetings and
gifts. The holiday has origins in the Roman

3. A company has tasked Mary, a
researcher, to find out the proportion of
housewives who use a particular brand
of cooking oil. The company wants to
know, with 95% confidence, the
proportion of households who like to use
that cooking oil. A previous survey has
shown that 42% like to use cooking oil X.
The study must be accurate to within 2%
