WHAT IS ATTRIBUTIVE WC?

Attributive word-combinations are one of the most common

types of free phrases in modern English.
They are often found in socio-political and scientific-technical
texts.
To achieve the correct translation of attributive phrases, the
translator must know the structural and semantic features of
such phrases and imagine what means he has in the Russian
language to overcome the difficulties that arise.

For instance, the phrase ‘Warsaw proposals’ may be translated

as:

Варшавские
Предложения
предложения Предложения
относительно
(сделанные в Варшавы
Варшавы
Варшаве)
From the above examples it follows that the translator has to do
significant analytical work in order to correctly convey the
semantic connections between elements in English attributive
combinations in the translation:

Передача смысловых связей

• welfare expenditures • расходы на социальные
нужды
• community centre • помещение для

мероприятий
• birth control • внутрисемейное
регулирование состава

On the other hand, it should be recognized that in many cases
such semantic deployment is not required, and then the
translation process is greatly facilitated.

HOW TO TRANSLATE ATTRIBUTIVE WC?

Attribute word-combinations with substantive attribute:

1) the noun in the possessive case + the noun in the general

case (Catharine’s Inquisition – Инквизиция Кэтрин);

2) the noun + the noun (Stone edifice – каменное здание).

In these cases, you must first find the keyword with which to start the
translation. Such a word is always at the end of the attributive
combination.

Thus, a whole chain of interconnected words related to the keyword is

formed. Schematically, this relationship can be represented as follows:

The main methods of translating attributive wc noun + noun into
Russian:
adjective + noun, for example, night flight – ночной полет;

noun + preposition + noun, for example, car keys – ключи от

автомобиля;
noun in the nominative case + noun in the genitive case, for example,
flight plan – план полета;

translation by a single noun, most commonly accepted fixed equivalent,

for example, crop rotation – севооборот, soil science – почвоведение.
ATTRIBUTE GROUP WITH AN ADJECTIVE
ATTRIBUTE

These groups have two main methods of translation.

They can transmitted into Russian by the phrase in the genitive
case with the preposition, for example, brown stone edifice –
здание их коричневого камня, dark wood table – стол из
темного дерева;
and can also be conveyed by a phrase with an adjective, for example,
loose white linen shirt – просторная белая льняная рубашка, bright
green eyes – ярко-зеленые глаза.
ATTRIBUTE GROUP WITH INNER
PREDICTION

These attribute groups are transferred to the Russian language

by a complex transformation depending on the norms and
existing realities of the translating language:
knee-length boots – сапоги до колена,
floor-to-ceiling window – окно во всю стену.
Also, these groups, which include whole sentences, can be conveyed by
complex sentences:
I-don’t-want-you reminder – напоминание о том, что он меня не
интересует.
CONCLUSION
So, attributive word-combinations present a serious difficulty in
translation. Nevertheless, the researchers developed the
following algorithm of actions when translating such structures:

1) determine the boundaries of the attribute structure;

2) translate a definable noun (last word of a phrase);
3) to analyze the semantic connections between the members of
the wc and break them down into semantic groups (the
analysis is carried out from left to right);
4) translate the phrase, starting with the defined word, and then
translate each semantic group from right to left.
