GORDEN

CULLEN
Cullen liked to call his theory and approach to understanding and manipulating the

elements of townscape an “Environment Game.”

He presented his discovery of humanistic urban design in three “gateways”:

1.Motion (Serial Vision)

2. Position (Here and There)

3.Content (This and That).

• Townscape is a visual art contained in the arrangement of buildings, roads, trees, nature and urban environment that decorate the

space.

• The townscape is one way that can be used in term of physical visual to recognize the physical form of a city.

• The townscape can also be identified by the shape of arrangement that is by the design of buildings and roads that creates various

emotional levels to the observer.

• Physical form of urban space influenced and determined by the shape and mass of the building.

• The linkage is perceived psychologically and physically by the observer as well as the physical form of urban space and the shape of

the building mass.

• The relationship can also be seen visually on the quality of a city is determined by the shape and size of the shape and arrangement of

urban space.

• The values should be added in the urban design of the city so that people can emotionally enjoy a good urban environment through

psychological and physical sense.

Four points that are emphasized in this book are

-serial vision

-place

-content

-the functional tradition.

SERIAL VISION

• Serial vision can be explain as the visual images captured

by an observer who happens when walking from one place

to another in a region.

• Recording by observers view the image into pieces which

gradually and forms an integral image recording area for

observers.

• Typically, there will be similarities or a marker of the pieces

of the view that gives certainty to the observer that he was

still in the same region.

PLACE

• Place are owned observers feeling emotionally at the time in

a certain place.

• For example a man on the edge of a cliff will have a very

lively sense of position where as a man at the end of deep

cave will react to the fact of enclosure.

• Place influenced by the boundaries that exist in such a

place.

CONTENT

• Content is the content of an area that affects one's feelings

toward the state of the city environment

(Fabric includes colour, texture, scale, style, character,

personality and uniqueness).

• Content depends on two factors, namely the level of

conformity and the level of creativity.

FUNCTIONAL TRADITION

Functional tradition is quality in the elements that make up the urban environment.

An urban environment is composed by two ways.

The first, the city as an object composed of outside planners as subjects.

Secondly the city that are constructed and then filled up by activities.

Both are a complementary continuity.

town as a place

throughout the whole of human civilization up to the twentieth century.

Closure Closure, may be differentiated from Enclosure, by contrasting ‘travel’ with ‘arrival’. Closure is the cutting up of the linear

town system (streets, passages, etc.) into visually digestible and coherent amounts whilst retaining the sense of progression. Enclosure

on the other hand provides a complete private world which is inward looking, static and self-sufficient.

Street Lighting Here we are concerned with the impact of a modern public lighting installation on towns and not, primarily, with the

design of fittings. Naturally it is impossible to disassociate the two since, as in all townscape, we are concerned with two aspects: first,

intrinsic design and second, the relationship or putting together of things designed.

Outdoor Publicity One contribution to modern townscape, startlingly conspicuous everywhere you look, but almost entirely ignored

by the town planner, is street outdoor publicity. This is the most characteristic, and, potentially, the most valuable, contribution of the

twentieth century to urban scenery. At night it has created a new landscape of a kind never before seen in history.

Here and There The practical result of so articulating the town into identifiable parts is that no sooner do we create a HERE than we

have to admit a THERE, and it is precisely in the manipulation of these two spatial concepts that a large part of urban drama arises.

Man-made enclosure, if only of the simplest kind, divides the environment into HERE and THERE. On this side of the arch, in

Ludlow, we are in the present, uncomplicated and direct world, our world. The other side is different, having in some small way a life

of its own (a with-holding).
