Materials are classified into three types according to their
properties for installation: Conducting materials Insulating materials 3.1 Conducting Material
(a) Copper: It is a good conductor of • (b) Aluminium: It is light weight
electricity. It is used in wiring and cheaper in comparison to materials in cables. Its has low copper. Therefore, this type of resistance and is used for conducting material is mostly used conduction of electricity at high, in electrical wiring. It is silvery– medium and low voltage (Fig. white in colour and it has a soft 3.2). It is used in wiring and texture. It is often used in wiring cable making. and making cable (Fig. 3.3). 3.2 Insulating Materials Insulating materials are used for insulating purpose. These types of materials are bad conductors of current. For example rubber, paper, mica, wood, glass and cotton. 3.3 Wiring Accessories (a) Switch :A switch is used to make or break an electrical circuit. Wiring accessories are used for connecting appliances (Fig. 3.4). (i) Surface switch: It is mounted on wooden boards fixed on the surface of a wall. (b) Holders A holder is of two types. 1. Pendant holder (Fig. 3.10) 2. Batten holder (Fig. 3.11)
(ii) Flush switch: It used for
decorative purpose (Fig. 3.8). (c) Ceiling rose: It is used to provide a tapping to the pendant lamp– holder through the flexible wire or a connection to a fluorescent tube (Fig. 3.12).
(e) Main switch To control the
electrical circuit a main switch is used. Through the main switch, the power in a building is controlled completely (Fig. 3.14).
(d) Socket outlet/plug: The socket
outlet has an insulated base with the moulded or socket base having three terminal sleeves (Fig. 3.13). 3.4 Low voltage cables Low voltage power and control cables pertain to electrical cables that typically have a voltage grade of 0.6/1 kV or below.
