Introduction
What is a Microprocessor?

Microprocessor is an important part of the

computer. It is a chip that has all the functions of the
CPU of a computer.
The Microprocessor has the following
functions of data storage, interaction with other
peripheral devices and other time related functions.
Introduction
What is a Microprocessor?

The Microprocessor is the CPU (Central

Processing Unit) itself which has undergone
marvelous changes since its invention. Its role is to
send and receive data and make the computer
function well.
Evolution of Microprocessor
Microprocessor has turned into the brain of millions
of gadgets, since year 1971. Over the past 40 years,
microprocessors have become faster and more
powerful, yet increasingly smaller and more
affordable.
Nowadays, modern microprocessors can perform
extremely sophisticated operations in areas such as
meteorology, aviation, nuclear physics and
engineering, and take up much less space as well as
delivering superior performance.
Evolution of Microprocessor

Busicom Calculator
1972 ●
It was one of the very first devices to feature a
microprocessor.

Commodore Pet
1977 ●
The PET is widely acknowledged as the first all-in-one
home computer.

Washing Machine
1978 ●
The first microchip controlled washing machines
came onto the market.
Evolution of Microprocessor

Arcade Mania
1980 ●
Namco introduced Pac-Man in the arcades of the US
and sparked a huge craze.

Osborne 1 Laptop
1981 ●
With a 5” screen, and weighting 10.7 kg, it really was
the great grandfather of modern laptops.

Nintendo NES
1986 ●
The gaming industry was revitalised by consoles such
as Nintendo Entertainment System.
Evolution of Microprocessor

Computing democratised
1991 ●
Business and personal computing exploded with a wide
range of desktops, laptops and even early tablets.

MP3 Player
1997 ●
The way we listen the music was forever changed in
the late 1990’s with the first mp3 players.

Blackberry Phones
1999 ●
The smartphone revolution kicked off when RIM
introduced the Blackberry 850.

as follows :
1. The processing speed is high.
2. Intelligence has been brought to systems.
3. Flexible.
4. Compact size.
5. Easy maintenance.
Advantages and disadvantages
of Microprocessor
The disadvantages of microprocessors are
given as follows :
1. It might get overheated.
2. Limitation of the microprocessor imposes on size of
data.
Overall about the
microprocessor
• The Microprocessor are their around for more than 45 years
ago already.
• It is now comes in many forms sizes & levels of sophistication
powering all the kinds of applications that they depend on
control of computer.
• Microprocessor devices include memory & input/output
devices constitute rest of the computer system.
