APPLICATIONS OF FUZZY SETS
 Introduction
 Fuzzy Numbers

 Application – Optimization Techniques

 Application - Topology
REASON FOR FUZZY
 Why we need fuzzy?
 What is the purpose of fuzzy?

 How we study the fuzzy concepts?

INTRODUCTION
Classical Set theory

Classes
 of objects with sharp boundaries

Example

If X = { a, b, c, d}
A={a,b} then the characteristics function of the set A is a function

A : X {0,1}
1, x A
A (x)  
0, x A
FUZZY SET THEORY
 A fuzzy set is defined by its ambiguous boundaries i.e.
there exists uncertainty about the location of the set
boundaries
 “If X is a collection of objects” (named the universe of
discourse) “denoted generically by X, then a fuzzy set
A  {( x,  A ( x )) / x  A  X }
 where is called membership function or
degree ofAmembership
: X [0,1] (also, degree of compatibility or
degree of truth). of x in A”
INTRODUCTION
 Support of fuzzy set

S( A) {x / A(x)  0}
α – cut set
A {x/ A(x) }
 Height of fuzzy set
 Maximum value of the membership function
 Normalized fuzzy set
 A fuzzy
set whose height is 1 or the maximum value of
membership function is 1
EXAMPLE OF FUZZY SETS

 X = Ages= { 5,15,25,35,45,55,65,75,85}
 Define fuzzy sets
 Ā=Infant and its membership function  A ( x)
 B=young and  B ( x )
 C=Adult and C (x)
 D=senior and  D ( x)
EXAMPLE
AGE INFANT YOUNG ADULT SENIOR
5 0 0 0 0
15 0 0.2 0 0
25 0 0.8 0.6 0
35 0 1 0.8 0
45 0 0.6 0.9 0
55 0 0.5 1 0.5
65 0 0.1 1 0.9
75 0 0 1 1
85 0 0 1 1
EXAMPLE
 Fuzzy set young
 {(5,0). (15,0.2),(25,0.9),….(85,0)}
 Support of young
 {15,25,35,45,55,65}

 α – cut of young say α = 0.5

 {25,35,45,55,65}

 Height of fuzzy sets young, adult and senior = 1

 Hence these fuzzy sets are normalized fuzzy sets.
STANDARD OPERATION OF FUZZY SET
 Complement
 A ( x)  1   A ( x), x  X

10
STANDARD OPERATION OF FUZZY SET
 Union

 A B ( x)  max(  A ( x),  B ( x)), x  X

STANDARD OPERATION OF FUZZY SET
 Intersection

 A B ( x)  min(  A ( x),  B ( x)), x  X

FUZZY NUMBER
 A fuzzy set is a fuzzy number is the following conditions
are satisfied
 Fuzzy set is a convex fuzzy set
 Fuzzy set is a normalized fuzzy set
 Fuzzy sets membership function is piecewise continuous
TRIANGULAR FUZZY NUMBER

APPLICATIONS - OPTIMIZATION
TECHNIQUES
 A company is involved in the production of two items (X and
Y). The resources need to produce X and Y are twofold,
namely machine time for automatic processing and craftsman
time for hand finishing. The table below gives the number of
minutes required for each item:
Item Machine time Craftsman time
X 13 20
Y 19 29
 The company has 40 hours of machine time available in the
next working week but only 35 hours of craftsman time. The
revenue received for each item produced (all production is
sold) is £20 for X and £30 for Y. The company has a specific
contract to produce 10 items of X per week for a particular
customer.
LPP
Maximize
Z  20 x1  30 x2

13 x1  19 x2  2400
20 x1  29 x2  2100
x1 , x2  0
FUZZY LINEAR PROGRAMING
 If the revenue in the above problem is nearly Rs.20, and
nearly Rs.30.
 Then the problem becomes a fuzzy LPP
FUZZY LPP
 Maximize
Z  20x1  30x2
13 x1  19 x2  2400
20 x1  29 x2  2100
x1 , x2  0
APPLICATION
 Topology
 Let X be a set. A topology on X is a collection  of
 ( X )
subsets X satisfying the following conditions
 T contains empty set and X
 T is closed under arbitrary unions

 T is closed under finite intersection

 Topological space
 (X, T) is called the topological space.
FUZZY TOPOLOGICAL SPACE
 Fuzzy Topology

 A fuzzy topology is a family T of fuzzy sets in X which

satisfies the following conditions

 Φ and X belongs to T
 If A and B belongs to T, then A∩B belongs to T
Ai   for each i  I , then  A i  
 If i

(X,T) is called a fuzzy topological Sace
