Do you know where Dance come from?

• -The origins of Dance are rooted in the “prehi

storic era.” Various artistic, religious, and soci
al forces started out the incorporation and de
velopment of Dance.
Do you know where Dance come from?
• -Dance has been a major form of religious ritual
and social expression.

• -It was used as a way of expressing and reinforci

ng tribal unity and strength, as an approach for
courtship and mating, and as a means of wors
hip, communication, and therapeutic experienc
e.
Do you know where Dance come from?
• --It was said that the first use of Dance was a gest
ure in order to communicate.

• --It was during the pre-Christian era that the real k

nowledge of dance came about within the great M
editerranean and Middle Eastern civilizations like
Egypt.
ANCIENT GREECE
Do you know where Dance come from?
• --Ancient Greeks also thought highly of Dance. Da
ncing was taught as an aid to military education
among the boys in Athens and Sparta. It was also
a form of entertainment and display. Greek Philos
ophers such as Plato, Aristotle, and Socrates stro
ngly supported this art as an Integration of Body a
nd Soul.
ANCIENT ROME
Do you know where Dance come from?
• --The Ancient Rome, on the other hand, gave less
importance to dancing. Dance became brutal and
sensationalized as their entertainers were slaves
and captives from many nationalities and it was us
ed more often for gruesome purposes (Kraus et a
l., 1981) Dance eventually became an integral part
of the corruption in the latter days of the Roman E
mpire.
middle/dark ages
Middle Ages
• -Middle Ages or Dark Ages marked the beginning of Soci
al Dancing. The peasants performed 2 basic types of da
ncing: The Round Dance and the Couple Dance. In Ro
und Dance, dancers hold each other by hand, forming a l
ong chain and move about in an open or closed circle, or
in an extended line. Couple Dance, at that time, was not
as popular as round dance as it was considered scandal
ous when first seen.
Middle Ages
• -Nobility soon followed the peasants’ lead in dancing but
in a more refined and courtly form, Court Dances emerg
ed as part of the chivalric way of life. Because of the nob
lemen’s and women’s nature of clothing and elaborate a
ccessories, their dance steps were limited to gliding, curt
seying, and posing as they were not able to move freely.
The peasants’ dances, in contrast, have large movement
s.
Middle Ages
• -During the Renaissance period, dance and art in
general gained impetus. The old restraints were lo
osened and clerical ideas and purposes no longer
dominate all creative expressions of the human sp
irit (Kruas and Gaufman, 1981)
Middle Ages
• -A vast dance movement occurred throughout the courts
of Europe in the 15th and 16th centuries. During these ti
mes, new court dances performed by the nobility came a
bout as well as the rise of the art BALLET in Italy and Fr
ance. (Kruas and Gaufman, 1981)
