Values and beliefs

• Values are your deepest feelings and thoughts


about yourself and life.
• Values have three parts:
i. What you think;
ii. How you feel;
iii. How you act , based on what you think and feel.
• People are most comfortable in situations which
the thinking, feeling, and acting aspects of their
values are working together.
Values and beliefs (cont..)

• Beliefs are the specific opinions you have


about yourself and particular people,
situations, things, or ideas.
• Beliefs have a tremendous influence on
behavior, and in turn, behavior can affect
beliefs.
• Both positive and negative beliefs have a
powerful influence on how you behave.
Values and beliefs (cont..)

• Positive Beliefs
– Some positive, or enabling, beliefs are:
i. “I will find the money to go to school.”
ii. “I will speak in class even though I’m nervous.”
iii. “I’m going to start my own business in five years.”
iv. “I will learn to swim.”
• Negative Beliefs
– Some examples of negative beliefs are:
i. “I can’t do algebra.”
ii. “I’m not smart enough to do that.”
iii. “Nobody cares about me.”
iv. “I’ll never find a job.”
Identifying goals

• Personals goals
– Relate to your family or private life.
• Educational goals
– Relate to your efforts to learn more and improve your
educational credentials.
• Professional Goals
– Objectives of your work life are professional goals.
• Community service goals
– Related to improving conditions in your neighborhood,
town, or city.
Creating action plan

• A written action plan will help you focus your efforts and
reach your goals without getting lost along the way.
• Steps for each intermediate or long term goals are as
follow:-
Stating a long-term goal in specific terms and giving it a time
frame.
Breaking down the goal into short-term goals, or steps, that
will lead to achieving the long term goal.
Indicating specific results of the short term goals in order to
monitor progress.
Setting deadlines for the short-term goals.
Managing time

• Not having enough time, wasting time, and


misusing time can add up to a life spent
without reaching your goals and potential.
• To achieve your goals, you will have to take
charge of your time.

Reaching goals

• Procrastinating
– Do not postpone a task that ought to be done. Postponing a task will not
make it easier.
• Using visualization
– Means imagining what it would be like to have already reached the goal.
– Visualizing your success gives you a powerful mental boost to get started.
• Motivating yourself
– Motivation that comes from within is called intrinsic motivation.
– When you are intrinsically motivated, you do something because you want
to and you enjoy it.
– Extrinsic motivation is an outside reward for behavior.
– Offer friend and exercise outfit and a ride to class.

• Overcoming fears
– The two most important fears that can interfere
with reaching a goal are fear of failure and fear of
success.
• Being flexible
• Being less than perfect
• The importance of hope
– Psychologists are finding that hope plays an
important role in achieving success in life.
