Formulation
wave guide
Waveguide is a structure
to provide path to
propagate waves I.e.
Electromagnetic and
sound wave from one end
to other as
electromagnetic feed lines
Unlike, coaxial cable there
is no center conductor and
waves propagate within
the confine of metallic
walls act as boundaries,
Waves moves in one
direction and confines in
guide by total internal
reflection from the walls,
so there is less lose of
energy that why we use
wave guide
Modes of propagation of electromagnetic waves
Electromagnetic waves
propagate through
[TM] and [TE] modes
Transverse electric
field[TE] having no
electric component
Transverse magnetic
field [TM]no magnetic
component
Transverse electro
magnetic field[TEM] I.e
no electric or magnetic
field in the direction of
propagation
Rectangular wave guide, cutoff frequency and modes of propagation of
rectangular wave guide
Rectangular wave guide can propagate in [TM] and [TE] mode, but cannot propagate in
[TEM] mode ,because in [TEM]mode both electric and magnetic fields of electromagnetic
waves are normal to the direction of propagation ,but in rectangular waveguide their must be
either electric or magnetic field should be in direction of propagation as proved from Maxwell
equations that curl of E produces M in normal to its direction ,so when E varies in waveguide
due to metallic walls M will in direction of propagation and vice versa which will not the [TEM]
mode
