INTRODUCTION:
 Nursing has been called the oldest of the arts and
the youngest of the professions. The term ‘Nurse’
evolve from the Latin word nutrix, which means
to nourish or to cherish. Today nursing emerged
as a learned profession, that is both a science and
an art.
 It is a body of knowledge and science i.e,
knowledge is an awareness or perception of
reality, which is acquired through learning or
investigation. Science is defined as both a unified
body of knowledge concerned with specific
subject matter.
DEFINITION:
 NURSING: Florence Nightingale (1860)
defined nursing over 100 years ago as "the act
of utilizing the environment of the patient to
assist him in his recovery”
 PROFESSION: An occupation that requires
advanced knowledge and skills and that it
grows out of society’s needs for special
services.
HISTORY OF DEVELOPMENT OF NURSING PROFESSION:

 Christianity: (300 ad)


 Middle ages: (1100-1200 ad)
 Fifteenth to nineteenth century:
 Florence nightingale [12 may 1820 – 13
august 1910]
 Twentieth century & twenty-first
century.

the health care. Therefore, it is essential
that a nurse should know her legal rights
and professional boundaries, and their
consequences of nonconformity.
