Forms of Tangible and Intangible Heritage
and the Threats to these
Introduction
The United Nations Educational, Scientific and
Cultural Organization (UNESCO) is the primary
transnational entity that manages and
negotiates matters relating to human heritage.
It defined cultural heritage as follows:
Cultural heritage is not limited to material
manifestations, such as monuments and
objects that have been preserved over time.
This notion also encompasses living
expressions and the traditions that countless
groups and communities worldwide have
inherited from their ancestors and transmit to
their descendants, in most cases, orally
(UNESCO, 2010).
Cultural heritage refers to the cultural aspects
like heritage sites, monuments, folklore,
traditional activities and practices, language,
etc. that are considered vital to be preserved
for the future generations.
CULTURAL HERITAGE
Cultural Heritage can be further divided
into two main groups.

CULTURAL HERITAGE

MATERIAL OR TANGIBLE NON-MATERIAL OR

HERITAGE INTANGIBLE HERITAGE
1. Material or tangible Heritage - refers to
physical artifacts produced, maintained and
transmitted intergenerationally in a society.
Tangible heritage in the form of structures,
monuments, historical sites, and other
artifacts.

Categories of Tangible Heritage

removed from the sites where they were
found and transferred to museums for
safekeeping and maintenance.
Categories of Tangible Heritage
2. Immovable tangible heritage are often left to
the elements of nature ( i.e., rain, wind, sand,
sun), which makes them vulnerable to decay
and corrosion.

Threats to Tangible heritage

1. Elements of nature ( rain, wind, sun)

2. Deterioration
3. Robbery
4. Fungus (changing of temperature)
Threats to Intangible heritage

1. Globalization
2. Technological revolution
3. Cultural homogenization
Threat to Intangible heritage

• Globalization is the process through which the

world community integrates into a common
social and economic system (Steger, 2009).
• Example, genres like pop music, hip hop,
electronic music, remixes has stormed in
keeping the ethnic/traditional music aside.
Preserving this heritage and passing it on to
future generations strengthens and keeps it
alive while simultaneously allowing it to evolve
and adapt. In order to safeguard intangible
cultural heritage, it must remain relevant to a
culture and be regularly practiced and learned
within communities and between generations.
By doing so, both the forms particularly the
intangibles will be able to survive in many
years to come.

Objectives
• Identify forms of culture and their threats.
• Write an essay on the threats to the tangible
and intangible heritage based on the lesson.
• Value culture as heritage.
Cultural heritage does not end at sites, landmarks,
monuments and collections of objects. It also
includes traditions or living expressions inherited
from our ancestors and passed on to the next
generation, such as oral tradition, performing arts,
social practices, rituals, festives events,
knowledge and practices concerning nature and
the universe or the knowledge and skills to
produce traditional crafts (UNESCO).
These forms, however, through the years witnessed
certain changes brought about by globalization,
technological revolution and even cultural
homogenization. These are expressions and
manifestations of intangible cultural heritage that
are under threat by the lack of support,
appreciation and understanding. If intangible
cultural heritage is not nurtured, it risks becoming
lost forever, or frozen as a practice belonging to the
past.
Threats to Intangible heritage

• Technological revolution is a period in which

one or more technologies is replaced by
another technology in a short period of time.
Ex. 1. Laro ng Lahi (sipa, patintero, luksong lubid)
Threats to Intangible heritage

3.Cultural homogenization

or assimilated by the dominant outside
culture (O’Connor, 2006)
Ex. Political system, (socialism in China,
capitalism in western countries like America
