The leader who inspired, to the world
Despite having
resorted to violence to
try to defeat the white
supremacy system and
having suffered a long
prison sentence as a
consequence (1962-
1990), Mandela left
prison with a message
of reconciliation and
unity as the only way
to rebuild South
Africa.
When he was born?
The charismatic South African leader was
born on July 18, 1918, in the humble
community of Mvezo, a small town in the
eastern Cape province.
Madiba, as those
who recognized
him as an inspiring
leader used to call
him, was born into
the family of
Nosekeni Fanny
and Gadla Henry
Mphakanyiswa.
Why is he famous?
He is considered one of the most
important leaders and referents of
freedom in the world, his decisive and
tireless struggle led him to assume the
role of Madiba or father of freedom as
those who identified with his struggle "I have fought against white
called him, in turn all this led him to domination and I have fought
take over the presidency of South Africa against black domination. I have
after so much struggle bringing with it promoted the ideal of a free and

• In addition, the free health system for children under six years
of age and pregnant women was introduced in 1994, which
was extended to users of basic health services in 1996.

• Nelson Mandela sculpture in Johannesburg.
• Mandela has received around 50 honorary doctorates from different universities around the world. Along with
Mother Teresa of Calcutta, in addition to Khan Abdul Ghaffar Khan, he has been the only foreigner who has been
distinguished with Bharat Ratna, the most prestigious civil award in India.
