Filtration

What is filtration?
• The separation of solids from liquids by passing the
mixture through a suitable medium, retaining the solid
matter on its surface and allowing the liquid to pass
through.

• Filter medium is a porous barrier - allowing liquid to

pass through while retaining most of the solids.

• The filter medium could be a screen (wire mesh),

cloth, paper, granular bed, etc.

Filtration
Filtration terms:

• Slurry: Continuous liquid phase

Solids suspended in the liquid

Filter cake: Continuous solids phase

Liquid inside the cake
Solid filtration rate, Tons/ m2 *h

• Filtrate: Liquid freed from solid in

the filtration process
Liquid filtration rate, l/m2*h

Pressure Filtration
Filter cake dewatering

• Reducing the liquid content of the filter cake

• Drying the filter cake by replacing the liquid inside the

cake by air or by reducing the liquid volume content
of the filter cake

Pressure Features
Filtration

• High separation force

+ slurry pumping pressure
+ mechanical pressing
+ air blow drying

• Flexibility
ton/m² + freely adjustable combination
of above
+ option for integrated,
efficient cake washing

Pressure Filtration
Described:

• Slurry is pumped under pressure through the filter

cloth, normally with centrifugal pump

• Surface / cake filtration – cake build up on cloth

• Batch process – removal of the cake is required
