 INTRODUCTION
Group D – Assembly Buildings

• Include any building or part of a building, where not less than 50 persons
congregate or gather.
• Purposes of amusement, recreation, social, religious, patriotic, civil, travel
and so on.

• Examples:- Theatres, motion picture houses, assembly halls , auditoria ,

gymnasiums, restaurants ,places of worship, dance halls, club rooms,
passenger stations and stadia.

 ASSEMBLY BUILDINGS
Buildings under Group D shall be further subdivided as follows:

• Subdivision D-1:-Buildings having a theatrical or motion picture

accomodating over 1000 persons.
• Subdivision D-2:-Buildings having a theatrical or motion picture
accomodating up to 1000 persons.
• Subdivision D-3:- Buildings without a permanent stage
accommodating 300 or more persons.

• Subdivision D-4:-Buildings without a permanent stage
accommodating less than 300 persons.

• Subdivision D-5:-All other structures not covered by D-1 to D-4.

• Subdivision D-6:-Mixed occupancies of assembly and mercantile.

• Subdivision D-7:-Underground and elevated mass rapid transit system

 DETAILS OF SITE
• Location :- College Playground , College of Engineering,
Sreekaryam , Trivandrum -16.

• Area of site :- 3000 square metres (approximately)

 SETBACKS REQUIRED

• Floor area of the building exceeds 800 sq. metres,

• Open yard spaces required to be left out as per Kerala Municipal

Building Code (KMBC) :

 Front yard : 6 metres (minimum)

 Side yard (each side ) : 1.5 metres (minimum)
 Rear yard : 1.5 metres (minimum)

 NBC REQUIREMENTS
• Main entrance to plot is of adequate width – 6 metres.
• Facilitates easy access to the fire engine.
• Entrance gate shall fold back against the compound wall.
(Ensures conformation with Part 3 clause 4.6 (d) of NBC)

• The building is grouped under subdivision D-2 as per the

specifications of NBC.

Drinking water supply
• Requirement – 15 litres /seat/day
• Total requirement – 10,500 litres / day

Parking space
• Population of Trivandrum city – 9.58 lakhs (2011 survey)
• Parking space required for 28 cars
• Additional 25 to 50 % area for two wheelers

Portable fire extinguisher
• 1 per 100 seats.
• Total – 7 extinguishers
• Gap between each – 15 m.

Rackets on wall
• 1.2 m from floor level
• Placards printed above them

• Enabled at auditorium , corridor , canteen and storage spaces.

Fire fighting tank

• Storage tank – 50,000 litres
• Replenishment system – 1000 lit/min pipe
• Suitable no. of manholes

• User requirements have been identified

• The required setbacks and access have been found.
