Learning objective:

• Use English countable and uncountable nouns in sentences.

• Use questions to offer food or drinks


Foods words are nouns.
Nouns represent things,
people, concepts.

Nouns in English can be


classified into
countable/uncountable

When you learn a new noun, you


should check if it is countable or
uncountable and note how it is used
in a sentence.

e.g. An apple, two apples, three apples.

For positive sentences we can use a/an For negatives we can use a/an for

Countable nouns

Most countable noun form their plural with an S.


Example: Apple - apples

The plural form of some uncountable nouns is irregular.


They don’t form the plural with an S.

Uncountable nouns cannot be counted, e.g. air, rice, water, etc.

Here are some examples of uncountable nouns:


bread rice coffee information
money advice luggage furniture

For positive sentences, use some with For negatives, use any with uncountable

• They are smaller number of nouns in English.
• There are many exceptions to this, but in general you can’t count uncountable nouns.
• They don’t make their plural form by adding S.

In questions we use a/an, any or how many with And we use any or how much with uncountable nouns.

Mostly, to quantify food or beverages that are uncountable, we can count the containers
they come.

Uncountable nouns do no have a plural form in English.
We use countable words to make them singular or plural

For example:
Milk does not have a plural form

to refer to milk in plural, we may use

2 glasses of milk
6 liters of milk
A carton of milk
much milk (not many)
Some milk
