ABOUT THE COMPANY
1. The Karnataka Vidyuth Kharkhane Limited, a fully owned Government of Karnataka
undertaking, is the successor to the Government Electric Factory, the first ever
manufacturer of electrical transformers in the country, established way back in 1933 by the
erstwhile Maharaja of Mysore.

2. Today, after six decades of successful operations, KAVIKA has emerged as a renowned
name for distribution transformers in the range of 25 KVA to 3150 KVA up to 11 KV Class
as well as for custom built / special type transformers as per specific requirements.

3. KAVIKA has a long list of satisfied clients who have stood by it for decades- a testimony
to trouble-free performance and reliability.

Department of EEE
KAVIKA has following features:

TRANSFORMER DEFINITION
• Transformer is a static electrical device, it transformers the electrical energy
from one circuit to other without any change in the frequency.

PRINCIPLES INVOLVED IN WORKING OF A
TRANSFORMER
FARADAY’S FIRST LAW OF ELECTROMAGNETIC INDUCTION:
Whenever a conductor is placed in a varying magnetic field an EMF gets induced across the
conductor (called as induced emf), and if the conductor is a closed circuit then induced current
flows through it.
FARADAY’S SECOND LAW OF ELECTROMAGNETIC INDUCTION:
The magnitude of induced emf is proportional to the rate of change of flux linkages with the
coil.
LENZ’S LAW:
When an emf is induced according to Faraday's law, the polarity (direction) of that induced emf
is such that it opposes the cause of its production.
PRINCIPLE OF MUTUAL INDUCTION:
When two or more coils are magnetically linked to each other, then an alternating current
flowing through one coil causes an induced emf across the other linked coils. This phenomenon
is called as mutual induction.

ABSTRACT
• In this project, synchronous buck converter for Electrical applications,
especially low power device applications such as charging mobile phone
batteries are considered.
• The comparative study between the proposed synchronous buck
converter and the conventional buck converter is analysed in terms of
efficiency improvement and switching loss reduction.
• The proposed system is simulated in the MATLAB-Simulink
environment and the practical implementation of the proposed converter
is done to validate the theoretical results.

FUNCTIONAL BLOCK DIAGRAM OF THE
PV ENERGY SYSTEM

Department of EEE 12
WORKING

• The converter topology used uses soft switching technique to reduce the
switching losses which is found prominently in the conventional buck
converter.
• The proposed synchronous buck converter reduces switching losses as
well as conduction losses.
• Thus efficiency of the system is improved and the heating of MOSFETs
due to switching losses reduce and the MOSFETs have a longer life.
• The DC power extracted from the PV array is synthesized and modulated
by the converter to suit the load requirements.

Department of EEE 13
MOTIVATION
• The demand for energy is increasing in the world. Unfortunately, the
existing fossil reserves that fuel the conventional power is depleting at high
rate.
• There are many alternative sources of energy such as solar, wind, ocean
thermal, tidal, biomass, geo-thermal, nuclear energy etc.
• The abundance of solar energy present everywhere makes it readily
available than any other source of energy. This solar energy can be
converted into electricity with the help of solar panels .
• The project is aimed at developing low power energy systems for electrical
applications such as mobile charging, solar lamps, etc. for use in rural areas.
