It enables us to share our thoughts, vision about
someone/something. It is also a way to strengthen our relation with someone. Social sites like face book, twitter, Google+ and even blog also help us to connect with the world and know what is going through out the world. NEGATIVE FEATURES OF SOCIAL SITES Social networking sites can also affect the life of a Person in a negative way. Overuse of these sites can adversely affect our studies, health and even our attitude towards life. People also have an influence from their friends in a negative way. ONLINE CRIMES Cyber Bullying- Cyber bullying refers to threatening someone through a network site. Cyber bullying has been a common crime around the world and there are also some cases of cyber bullying in which the victims committed suicide. Identity Theft- Identity theft is a form of stealing another person's identity in which one pretends to be someone else by assuming their identity. It is done to access resources or obtain credit on behalf of others. the victim can suffer adverse consequences if he/she is held accountable. Hacking- It is a way to access someone's social account by cracking his/her password. It is often done to humiliate a person online. There are many cases in which hacking is involved. PRESENT USE OF SOCIAL SITES Today many children between 12-18 use face book for more than 4 hours. In India 76% teenagers use face book everyday. We should not use these sites for too long as they are not good for us. Sharing our thoughts is a good thing but excessive using of these sites is harmful. We should instead use it for a good cause like having a meeting with teachers who are in face book and ask questions from them. SHOULD SOCIAL MEDIA BE AVOIDED? No, social media does not have to be completely avoided. However, the more aware users are to the potential threats and dangers, the more protection they have against them. Social media is a new method of social interaction in this age of information, and to ignore it would only isolate you from social communication, and the plenty of useful or enjoyable aspects of social networking. The point here is to be on guard, be vigilant, and be aware of the ways in which social media can be dangerous. IS SOCIAL NETWORKING HAS GOOD OR BAD IMPACT ON KIDS?
Social media present risks and benefits to children but parents
who try to secretly monitor their kids’ activities online are wasting their time, according to a presentation at the 119th Annual Convention of the American Psychological Association. “While nobody can deny that Facebook has altered the landscape of social interaction, particularly among young people, we are just now starting to see solid psychological research demonstrating both the positives and the negatives,” said Larry D. Rosen, PhD, professor of psychology at California State University, Dominguez Hills. HOW SOCIAL NETWORKS HELP OUR KIDS? Young adults who spend more time on Facebook are better at showing “virtual empathy” to their online friends. Online social networking can help introverted adolescents learn how to socialize behind the safety of various screens, ranging from a two-inch smartphone to a 17-inch laptop. Social networking can provide tools for teaching in compelling ways that engage young students. HOW SOCIAL NETWORKS CAN HARM OUR KIDS?
Teens who use Facebook more often show more narcissistic
tendencies while young adults who have a strong Facebook presence show more signs of other psychological disorders, including antisocial behaviors, mania and aggressive tendencies. Daily overuse of media and technology has a negative effect on the health of all children, preteens and teenagers by making them more prone to anxiety, depression, and other psychological disorders, as well as by making them more susceptible to future health problems. Facebook can be distracting and can negatively impact learning. Studies found that middle school, high school and college students who checked Facebook at least once during a 15-minute study period achieved lower grades. PREVENTION Children under the age of 13 should not be using the internet without some form of parental supervision. Most social network web sites have a minimum age limit so that young children cannot make profiles. However, it is easy to fool these systems. Make sure they are not entering too much private data, such as their home address or what school they go to. Just as it is simple for a young child to fake their age online, it is easy for a potential predator to fake a profile claiming to have the same interests as, and be the same age as, your child. GUIDENCE FOR PARENTS
. “If you feel that you have to use some sort of
computer program to surreptitiously monitor your child's social networking, you are wasting your time. Your child will find a workaround in a matter of minutes,” he said. “You have to start talking about appropriate technology use early and often and build trust, so that when there is a problem, whether it is being bullied or seeing a disturbing image, your child will talk to you about it.”
