Uniformly

Accelerated
Motion (UAM)
Objectives:
At the end of the session, the learners are hoped and
expected to be able to:

• explain the physical meaning of motion with constant

acceleration;
• apply the equations of UAM in solving word problems
involving constant acceleration.
Uniformly Accelerated Motion (UAM) or motion with
constant acceleration is a special kind of motion wherein the
velocity changes at a constant rate.
Consider a race car whose motion is along the -axis. It is initially at rest
and it has an acceleration of which is constant from 0 to 4.0 seconds.
Variations of variables in UAM
Change in variables
• For the initial quantities of the
position and velocity, the subscript
“” will be replaced with subscript
“0” to denote that these values are
when time .
• The subscript of the final position
and velocity quantities will be
dropped.

Variables which are included in the UAM equations:

elapsed time velocity at

position at velocity at any time
position at any time acceleration
Equations in UAM
The following equations are useful for motion with constant acceleration:

• No position involved
(Equation 1)
• No final velocity involved
(Equation 2)
• No time involved
(Equation 3)
• No acceleration involved
(Equation 4)
Sample Problem:
 1. A light plane must reach a speed of for take-off. How far must the plane
travel in order to take-off if it has a constant acceleration of ?

 2. An automobile starts at rest and accelerates at after a traffic light turns
green. How far will it have gone when it is already traveling at ?
Sample Problem:
 3. A plane flying at is uniformly accelerated at the rate of . What is the
distance it will travel during a interval after the acceleration begins?

 4. A bike rider pedals with constant acceleration to reach a velocity of east
over a time of . During the period of acceleration, the bike’s displacement is
east. What was the initial velocity of the bike?

 5. A car accelerates at a constant rate from to while it travels a distance of .

How long does it take to achieve the final speed?

 6. A woman driving west along a straight road at a speed of sees a deer on
the road ahead. She applies the brakes when she is from the deer. If the
deer does not move and the car stops right before it hits the deer, what is
the acceleration provided by the car’s brakes?
