Subject Matter as Source of Curriculum
■ The nature of the discipline/subject matter as one of the main sources of
curriculum. Different subjects are unique in terms of design and content.
There are specific skills and contents that should be emphasized in each
of the disciplines. Understanding the nature of the discipline of subject
matter requires educators to closely analyze the contents prescribed by
the DepEd, especially the K-12 curriculum. The curriculum framework,
curriculum goals. Descriptions, standards, and competencies in the
different subjects will help educators understand what should be taught
and how to teach the different subjects. The same with the CHED and
TESDA. Thus, it is very evident that subjects will basically dictate the
curriculum content standards and performance standards that really need
to be given to the students. Hence, making the students whole – rounded.
Society as Source of Curriculum

■ Teachers, administrators and curriculum designers need to understand the culture,

socio – economic, and political conditions of the people. Understanding the
context is important in developing a relevant and responsive curriculum. This is
useful in selecting curriculum goals and objectives, content and learning
experiences. There are many changes in the society that need to be considered in
the development of curriculum. Science and technology continue to influence
the daily lives of man with new findings, technology, and information that drives
movement in the curriculum. For instance, the basic education (Elementary) had
their battle cry on 3Rs (Reading, writing and arithmetic), now they included
comprehension. But in the 21st century skills we have the 8Cs.
Learner as Source of Curriculum

■ Understanding the learner is one of the major sources of

the curriculum. Although the curriculum content is se by
the DepEd, CHED and TESDA for instance. Educators
and curriculum developers have tried to align the
curriculum t the needs and nature if the students. Students
differ in many context such as culture, language, learning
styles, needs and types and level of motivation. Socio –
economic status, and alike.
