 Brayton Cycle is Used in Gas Turbines
 Designed by George Brayton around 1970

INTRODUCTION  Applicable when both compression and

expansion take place in rotatory
machinery
 Compressor
 Combustion Chamber
 Turbine
Units of Brayton Gas  Heat Exchanger

Turbine
Closed Gas Turbine

 Open Cycle Gas turbine –

Inlet to compressor is taken open air
Exhaust gas is expelled to open air
Compact
 Closed Cycle Gas turbine
Heat Exchanger used to recirculate
the air
Considering the Specific heat of gas
and air equal
Exhaust process is replaced by
Constant Pressure heat rejection
process
Open Cycle Gas Turbine

Line 1-2 Represents: Irreversible adiabatic compression

Line 1-2’ represents: Ideal Isentropic Compression
Line 2-3 Represents: Constant Pressure Heat supply
Line 3-4’ represents: Ideal isentropic expansion
Line 3-4 Represents: Irreversible Adiabatic Expansion
Methods of Thermal
Efficiency
improvement
1. Inter-Cooling
Reheat
 Temperature of exhaust gas is more
than Outlet temperature of air after
compressor
 Exhaust gases energy is used
 This energy heats the air after
Regeneration compressor
 Results in decrease in Consumption of
fuel
REGENERATION OPEN CYCLE
Work Required to Run the Compressor

 Wc = Cpa (T2-T1)
 In terms of compression ratio
 Wc = Cpa*T1((rp)g-1/g-1)/hc
g = Coefficient of adiabatic expansion
rp= Pressure ratio
h= Efficiency of compressor
Work Developed by Turbine

 Wt = cpg (T4 – T5)

Effectiveness Of Cycle
Merits and Demerits
 Very high power to weight ratio, compared
to reciprocating engines
 Smaller than most reciprocating engines of
same power rating

Advantages of  Moves in one direction only, with far less

vibration than a reciprocating engine
Gas Turbine  Fewer moving parts than reciprocating
engines
Engines  Low operating pressures
 High operation speeds
 Low lubrication oil cost and consumption
 Can run on wide variety of fuels
 Cost is very high
 Less efficient than reciprocating
engines at idle speed

Disadvantages  Longer startup than reciprocating

engines
 Less responsive to changes in power
demand compared to reciprocating
engines
