Module 1: Rediscovering the Self
Introduction and Focus Questions
Life is a very long journey that we have to face head-on. Whether
we like it or not, challenges will always be on our way. Sometimes we
think of it as something that will hinder us from achieving our goals, but
its real intention is to strengthen us, make us bolder, and make us a
person who can do everything if we put our hearts. Encountering
challenges is also a way of discovering ourselves, whether we are just
passive or aggressive, optimistic or pessimist, weak or strong-hearted,
and whether we move forward or give up. You are responsible for your
journey; you carve your path.
People express themselves through writing. Poetry, either a lyric poem
or epic, is one way of self-expression. Each country has a different
culture, and this culture can be found in their literature. Epic is a
narrative that talks about a hero's adventure and the challenges
encountered while discovering their identity and finding out their life's
purpose. At the same time, lyric poems express the poet's healthy
thoughts and feelings regarding his self, environment, and experiences.
In this module, you will rediscover yourself while empathizing with the
personas of some Anglo-American literature, reflecting on how they
overcame their challenges while understanding and accepting their
identity. You will also develop into a critical reader who knows how to
determine what comprises a good poem.
Remember to look for the answers to the following essential questions
to guide you in this module:
1. What is the best way to know one’s self?
2. What makes a poem effective?
Most Essential Learning Competencies (MELCs)
In this module, you will consider the abovementioned questions as you learn the
