THE EVIDENC

of
Alfred Wegener’s
Theory
What happened to
Pangaea?
• Over time the
plates began to drift
apart.
• This was caused by
convection currents
in the
asthenosphere.
The theories of plate tectonics and continental
drift were proposed at the beginning of the last
century by a German scientist, Alfred Wegener. The
theory explained why earthquakes and volcanoes
were concentrated in specific places around the
boundaries moving plates.

EARTHQUAKE = New Mountains &

Volcanic Eruptions
There are similar patterns of rocks and similar
fossils on both sides of the Atlantic – including the
fossils of land animals that would have been unable to
swim across an ocean. These examples of fossils were
found in these continents and nowhere else.
The figure shows that Plate Tectonics theory truly happened
even if it was still considered as a theory, a not yet proven
investigation, but it shows how some different fossils migrated
and separated as the continents continuous move to the
other. If you are going to cut the modern world map today,
and try to connect the separated continents, you can still bring
it back together with some missing pieces.
One of the best examples that
may support Wegener’s
evidence of his theory was the
different species around the
world. Some of the species are
found in the Philippines, but it
can only be found from other
countries. Our country is part
of the continent of Asia but
due to the drifting of
continents, the Philippines
were separated from the large
continent like other countries.
Example is the TARSIER, which
originated from North
America, Euro-Asia. As the
Euro-Asia and North America
separated, the three
continents also had this kind of
species, the Tarsier.
From a super continent Pangaea before, all
species can migrated easily from different
places to hunt their food, but when the
continents starts to drift away, that’s the start
of having species to stay on the country
where they separated
What if Pangaea never broke apart?
ADVANTAGES
• Transporting weapons, people, and supplies
would all be faster and cheaper if certain
countries were right next to each other
• The entire world would be more unified than
ever
• You could visit all of the places in the country
in a single day
What if Pangaea never broke apart?
DISADVANTAGES

• Regions in the middle of Pangea would have

lush rainforests along their borders
• The rain which comes from the ocean
wouldn’t be able to travel far enough inland
• Pangea practically uninhabitable by humans
and other species
• We might have less diversity of species
