WHAT’S IN?
Holistic Perspective and Partial Point of view

Before we engage in Philosophical inquiry, we must be able to distinguish holistic and

partial point of view. This is critical for everyone doing philosophy because it sets limit in
coming up with conclusions about a given situation.

WHAT’S IN?
Holistic Perspective

Holish comes from the Greek word "holos" which literally means all, entire, totality.

• looks at all the aspects of given problem or situation

• all aspects are guven importance when making conclusions,
• all aspects are tied in together to form a general overview of the problem
or situation

• All aspects are given importance when making conclusions,
• All aspects are tied in together to form a general overview of the problem or
situation

Example:
The teacher listens first to both stories of his two arguing students before making
any conclusion about the issue.

Holistic doctors don't just provide patients with medications. Instead, they look at
ways to improve life balance and eradicate health problems from their root source,
such as high stress or bad nutrition.

WHAT’S IN?
Patial point of view

In philosophy, a point of view is defined as a way or a method how one sees or

perceives the reality or a phenomenon. therefore, when one says a partial point of
view, he has clearly stated and sdmitted that the way he sees reality or certain
phenomenon is based on a single factor or casual agency.
A partial point of view then is a perspective that is based on one of the component
parts of a whole.

A partial point of view then is a perspective that is based on one of the component
parts of a whole.

• Looks at only limited number of aspects of a given problem or situation.

• Conclusions are madef based on considering some, but not all, sides of the
problem or situation.

A teacher scolds Student A after Student B accused him of stealing her pencil case.
However, the teacher only listened to the story of student B, and not to Student A,
before deciding to scold the stident.

Holistic Perspective and Partial Point of View

Looking at the characteristics of holistic and partial

point of view, we can conclude that using a
holistic perspective, is more desirable in doing
philosophy than using a partial point of view.
Partial point of view only promote limited
knowledge on the situation. this leads to wrong
conclusions.
Holistic Perspective and Partial Point of View
learning Philosophy requires learning to look into all available
perspectives and work on their relationships to come up with sound,
logical, and valid conclusions.

doing philosphy helps one to develop the skill of broadly looking at

the stuation first before concluding anything.

People tend to apply an analytical perspective when looking at

problems or situations. A holistic view gives rise to a more
appreciative perspective about life, as we are able to look
at life in its totality.
