Brainstorm:

What is Workplace Health and Safety?

Workplace Health and Safety

 “Workplace Health and Safety (WHS) is the discipline

concerned with protecting the health and safety of all
stakeholders in the workplace from exposure to hazards and
risks resulting from work activities” (Consult Australia 2015)
Hazards
A hazard is a source or potential source of human
injury, ill health or disease. Anything which might
cause injury or ill health to anyone in your
workplace is a hazard
Activity and Video
 Thereare many hazards in the workplace! How
many can you name?

ACTIVITY
In your teams brainstorm common workplace
hazards

 Let’swatch this clip ‘Top 10 Work Fails’ – take note

of each of the different hazards that you see
Occupational Health and Safety:

involves legislation, codes of practice, regulations, standards,

licenses and permits, policies, procedures, work practices and
activities that aim to protect the health and safety of all
people in the workplace.
Legislation
-An organization is under an obligation to comply with certain legislation (laws) and
regulations.

e.g. Occupational Safety and Health Act 2005 (Mauritius)

-The objectives of the legislation include:

*identifying, assessing, eliminating and controlling risk
*promoting and maintaining health & safety at work
*protecting people against risks, injury and illness
*provide for consultation and participation
(i.e. Health & Safety committees,
Health & Safety representative/officer/First Aid Officer,
Fire Warden/Fire Marshall)
Legislation (Aus)

 10 OHS Statutes
Purpose of the WHS Act
 The WHS Act provides a framework to protect the health, safety and welfare of all
workers at work and of other people who might be affected by the work. The WHS Act
aims to:
 protect the health and safety of workers and other people by eliminating or minimising risks
arising from work or workplaces
 ensure fair and effective representation, consultation and cooperation to address and
resolve health and safety issues in the workplace
 encourage unions and employer organisations to take a constructive role in improving work
health and safety practices
 assisting businesses and workers to achieve a healthier and safer working environment „
 promote information, education and training on work health and safety
 provide effective compliance and enforcement measures, and
 deliver continuous improvement and progressively higher standards of work health and
safety
Regulations
-Regulations support the legislation – these are
requirements, duties and procedures that apply to all
workplaces or to specific industries

An example of OHS regulations

would be:
1) requirements/qualifications
for undertaking specific tasks
2) Testing equipment prior to
use
3) Using effective signage
Codes of Practice

- rules outlining the responsibilities or proper practices for an individual,

party or organization What would be an example of this?

CODES OF PRACTICE FOR

DANGEROUS GOODS

-workers should wear conductive

clothing and footwear; and avoid the use
of non-conducting plastics or
rubber hoses, containers or funnels.

Question: What’s the difference between Regulations and Codes of Practice??

Answer: Codes of Practice are not legally enforceable whereas Regulations are
Standards
 -Standards -specify the requirements that apply to equipment,
products, materials and systems that are used in workplaces;
 for example: the way items are designed, the performance,
endurance and quality
Licenses and permits
-Workplaces that perform activities that are
potentially hazardous to the community
and the environment may be controlled by
granting licenses or permits

-Organizations that store or dispose of

dangerous goods, may be required
to obtain license or permit from the
relevant authority
What is another example of this?

Liquor License, Drivers License

Penalties

 -Organizations and individuals who do not comply with the

legislation may incur fines, penalties and/or non-monetary
penalties
Activity
 Video – It Happened in Bopal

 Ingroups write your answers to

the following:
1. What happened in Bopal?
2. Why did it happen?
3. What could have been done to
prevent it?
To-do before next week
