Importance Of Vegetables

Rich Source Of Basic And Protective

elements
• Rich in carbohydrate, proteins, minerals and vitamins and are useful
for neutralizing the acidic effect produced during digestion of meat,
cheese and other fatty acids.
• Promotes digestion, prevents constipation and proper growth and
development of overall human health.

The minerals, source and deficiency are given in the next slide.

More Yield Per Unit Area
• Not only are vegetables good in taste but also gives higher yield per
unit area compared to cereals and other crops.

More Net Per Unit Area Per Day

• Most vegetables are quick growing and ready to harvest within a
short period of time enabling the grower to practice succession
cropping and inter cropping and thus providing the grower with some
profit compared to cereals and other crops.
Role In Agro Forestry
• During early stages, crops like potato, bhendi, tomato, brinjal, onion
and peas can be grown successfully while during later stages(5-10
years) crops like chilli, palak and ginger can be grown efficiently.

Employment of great number of man

power per unit area
• Usually grown with intensive cultivation practices, it requires more
labourers for one or the other operations continuously throughout
the year starting from soil preparation to marketing
Suitability for succession and intercropping
resulting in greater intensity of cropping
• Vegetables can be grown throughout the year. Some crops can be
grown as intercrop and few vegetables can be grown twice or even
thrice in a year.

Flexibility in Production Programme

• The production programme can be adjusted and changed for better
profits according to fruit crops.
Problems and prospects of vegetable
Production in India
1) Vegetables are highly perishable
- Due to respiration, loss of water occurs through transpiration and
undergo chemical change.
2) Ignorance on nutritive values
- inspite of availability of facilities for cultivation, due to lack of
knowledge on nutritive values of different vegetable crops,
vegetable gardening is not given much attention.
3) Lack of transport facility
4) Problems of Insect, pest and diseases.
5) Lack of enough refrigeration and storage facility
- Only proper vegetable storage facility is available in big cities in India
thus small grower cannot afford those facilities.

6) Malpractice in the market

- The main aim of marketing is that the producers should get a suitable
price for their products. At present due to middlemen and the price meant
for the produce is not received by the producer.
