IBM Domino
Terms and definitions.

DB2 Term Definition

A collaborative client-server software platform from IBM.
IBM Domino and Notes (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/IBM_Notes)

Domino Server Computer where the IBM Domino database software is installed.
A document-centric collection of data organized for easy access and retrieval. IBM Domino databases are proprietary files that generally
Database use the .NSF (Notes Storage Facility) file extension.

Mailbox Type of IBM Domino database used to store email data.

Transaction Log Log file used to track transactions against one or more Domino databases. Logging method examples include circular, linear, and archive.
Allows multiple Domino servers to run on a single computer. Each Domino server partition has its own Domino data directory and
Partitioned Server NOTES.INI file.
NOTES.INI file contains many settings that IBM Domino relies upon to work properly.
NOTES.INI To back up a Domino partition server or one of Domino installations, specify the absolute path for the NOTES.INI file. This NOTES.INI file
should be associated with the particular server partition or installation that you want to use to perform the backup.

NetBackup 8.0 and IBM Domino
IBM Domino backup types

Protecting IBM Domino with NetBackup

Backup types.

Backup type Description

• NetBackup administrator can schedule backups to occur automatically and unattended, under the
Automatic control of the NetBackup master server.
• Allows the administrator initiate a full backup or incremental backup that is set up in the policy
Manual manager.
• Requires a User Backup schedule type to be defined in the Lotus-Notes policy. User-directed backups
of Lotus Notes databases are similar to backups of normal files.
• Transaction log extents are not marked as ready to be recycled after they are successfully backed up.
User Directed Because transaction log extents are not recycled, a user backup is similar to a snapshot of the
databases at a given point in time.
• User-directed backups should be used for special situations and should not replace regularly
scheduled full backups or incremental backups.

IBM Domino configuration tasks

Protecting IBM Domino with NetBackup

Key configuration tasks.

Task Description
Storage Unit and Media Information regarding target storage devices and retention settings for Domino backup data.
Backup Schedules Policy schedules initiate automatic backups and specify when a user can initiate operations.
Domino servers that will be protected by the backup policy (Domino servers must have the NetBackup
Clients
Client installed).
Policy A backup policy for a database defines the backup criteria for a specific group of one or more clients.

Notes and Best Practices
Final thoughts on using NetBackup to protect
IBM Domino infrastructures
Notes and Best Practices
Domino backup and recovery best practices - general

Domino Best Practices

General.

• Leverage NBU database agents where available for better backup & recovery
performance, as well as deduplication
• Use Data Classification to clearly identify structured data and unstructured data
• Identify backup and restore SLA’s for all data types so appropriate tuning parameters can
be utilized as part of the design (SAN Client vs. Snapshot Client, etc.)
• If using deduplication , leverage “like” de-duplication pools for “like” data
• Utilize Storage Lifecycle Policies (SLPs) to protect transaction log backups to Advanced
Disk for the initial backup (copy 1) for faster backups & restores, then duplicate to
deduplication disk/tape for long term retention

Notes and Best Practices
Domino backup and recovery best practices - general

Domino Best Practices

General.

• Smaller segment sizes can product better deduplication rates

• To use smaller segment sizes for Domino databases (.NSF), edit pd.conf:
# Preferred segment size in KB for different file types
# edb=Exchange, mdf,ldf=MSSQL snapshot, segsize64k=MSSQL stream
PREFERRED_EXT_SEGKSIZE = nsf:16,mdf:64,ndf:64,segsize64k:64

Notes and Best Practices
Domino backup and recovery best practices – data deduplication

Domino Best Practices

Data deduplication.

Confirm that Lotus Notes uses the following options:

• Disable 'Use LZ1 compression for attachments‘ on all mailboxes and at the db level
• Disable 'Use Domino Attachment and Object Service' on all mailboxes and at the db level
• Disable 'Compress database design' on all mailboxes and at the db level
• Disable 'Compress document data' on all mailboxes and at the db level
• Do not use a 3rd party compression app for attachments
• 'Compact' is enabled with switches '-B -S 10' (runs every Friday at 10PM)
• Configuration changes have been made to extend user quotas to the point that they will
not get alerts suggestion compaction as a action they can take

Notes and Best Practices
Domino backup and recovery best practices – data deduplication

Domino Best Practices

Data deduplication.

Confirm on the NetBackup deduplication side:

• Default segment size values for NetBackup were in place (COMPRESSION = 1,
MATCH_PDRO = 0, LOCAL_SETTINGS = 0). Data compressed prior to storage, client
data segmented using static segment size. Backups ran for a month before any
NetBackup changes were made.
• We have seen better performance in some environments with a variable sliding segment
size. Therefore we configured a variable segment size on the NetBackup media server
('MATCH_PDRO = 1', 'LOCAL_SETTINGS = 1'). No improvements occurred.
• We then confirmed that 'COMPRESSION = 1', 'LOCAL_SETTINGS = 1' and
'MATCH_PDRO = 1' are reported in the pdplugin log, AND those values are being
honored, plus we can see the higher-than-128K segments being sent to the content router.
• Desired variable segment size method is being utilized by pdplugin/deduplication
