Design criterion for Core

and cavity Inserts

INSERTS: Cavity and Core
• For moulds containing intricate impressions and for multi
impression it is difficult to machine the core and cavity plate
from single blocks of steel.
• The machining sequence and operation would be altogether
to complicated and costly.
• So, machining the impression out of small block of steel are
known as inserts.
• The one which forms the female part is termed as cavity
insert and conversely, the one which forms the male part is
the cavity insert.
• These are then inserted and securely fitted into holes in a
substantial block or plate of steel called bolster.
SHAPE AND TYPE OF INSERT.
• To simplify machining the insert should be either circular
or rectangular in shape.

DESIGN CONSIDERATION:

COST - The total is derived from the cost mould material

and the cost of machining and fitting.
The integer method requires whole mould plate
to be made expensive mould steel, whereas the
insert method needs only that part which forms
forms the impression to be made of mould steel.

NO. OF IMPRESSIONS - It is preferable to use insert

system in case of multi
impression mould.
3. MOULD SIZE –
The integer mould require quite heavy
Steel blocks are handled during the manufacturing stages.
This not only increases the difficulties but also increases the
Capital cost. So, inserts are preferred.

4. HEAT TREATMENT-
During heat treatment there are possibilities
that the steel may distort.
The smaller the block of steel the less likely is the distortion.
5. REPLACEMENT-
With inserts it is possible to repair
a damaged impression.

6. COOLING SYSTEM-
This is usually far simpler to
design for the inserts because the cooling system can
be placed close to the cavity walls without sealing
complication that arise when attempting to cool core
and cavity inserts.
