USE OF POWERFUL VERBS

• Words that give vivid picture of an action or what someone is


doing
• Examples:
• Munch, chew, devour, or nibble (instead of eat)
• Stimulate a mental image of a specific action in the minds of the
audience
USE OF EMOTIVE LANGUAGE

• Words that carry emotional content or those that evoke feelings


• Example:
• Using the words young and defenseless to describe a child
• This elicits a strong emotion from the audience such as sympathy
USE OF SENSORY WORDS

• Words that appeal to any of the five senses (sight, smell, touch,
taste, hearing)
• Examples:
sugar-cured ham and pure spices are all that we use
this delectable, juicy, mouth-watering ham is perfect for
sandwiches
USE OF RHETORICAL QUESTIONS

• Questions that do not require answers which are meant to capture


audience’s attention
• Example:
• Do you want to avoid crowds and skip the long lines at department stores
this holiday season? XOXO offers you the convenience to shop for your gifts
when you want from wherever you are.
USE OF FIGURATIVE LANGUAGE

• The use of figures of speech such as simile, metaphor,


personification, alliteration etc.
• Example:
• Do the dew.
EXAGGERATION

• An overstatement used to emphasize a point or to create a strong


impression
• Example:
• Among Us is the best and most exciting online game ever created!
USE OF FACTS

• Are pieces of information that can be verified thru tests and


observations
• Are used to add weight to or to back up a claim of a product
• Example
• A tablet of Lyco- X Multivatamin contains 75% of your daily vitamin C needs.
REPETITION

• Is done when words or phrases are repeated in a text to reinforce


a point or to make the audience remember an idea
• Example:
• Look good! Feel good! Visit Hairtastic now!
TASK

You are a TV scriptwriter. Together with your team


(choose your team – 3 members), you were tasked to write
the script for a TV commercial of a popular household
product. Apply your knowledge about persuasive texts in
writing the script. Download the TV Commercial Script

Formulating a Statement of Assertion
What is an assertion?
A strong declaration of your position about a certain topic

Can be done through a thesis statement

main claim or main argument of a persuasive text


controls the scope of the text
gives preview of entire argument
Why is the thesis statement important?

The thesis statement is one of the most important sentences in your paper. Its
functions include:

•Establishing the purpose of your paper


•Stating your position on the topic
•Guiding the reader through your argument
•Keeping your writing focused

You should keep your thesis statement in mind throughout the writing process: the main body
 should expand on this statement, support it with evidence, and argue for its validity.
