CONTINUOUS WRITING

SECTION B
TOTAL MARKS : 50
The continuous writing is basically assessed by ‘general impression’.
However, the following levels can be noted.

Targeted Marks Remarks/Description


Category Allocated
 Meaning is fairly clear
 Many serious errors – mainly SWE
   A few simple structures are used correctly
U (i) 14-19  Simple words are spelt correctly
   Paragraphs lack planning
 Tone and style hidden in density of errors

 Meaning is usually blurred but reader is able to get some sense


U (ii) 8-13  Multiple word errors (MWE)
 Almost unrecognizable as pieces of English
U (iii) 0-7  Where occasional patched of clarity occur marks should be
awarded.
Strategy used – choose what you know

1. Be Prepared With 4 Readymade Paragraphs On:
• Yourself
• Your Friends
• Your Family &
• Your School

2. Choose a word that you know best from any one of the
questions and continue your essay by writing about it.

3. Targeted score= at least 19 marks


SPM 2018 QUESTIONS

1. Describe a problem you once had while you were travelling.


Explain what you did to solve the problem and what you have learned from the
experience.
2. Some people complain that they have no free time.
Discuss the reasons why they might say this and suggest how they could use
their time better.
3. Write a story about a teenager who had an unusual hobby.
Explain what was unusual about the hobby and how the teenager’s friends
became interested in it.
Begin your story with: “Even though it was a strange hobby, everyone came to
love it ….”
4. Young people should be trusted to make their own decisions.
How far do you agree with this opinion? Explain why.

5. Imagine you went to a big sports event. Describe what you saw, what happened
and how you felt on that day.

SAMPLE ESSAY 1:

Travelling is fun. We can travel by motorcycle, car, bus, train and aeroplane. [13 words]
I am 17 years old. I am a form five student. I like travelling. I have some friends. They are Amir,
Ramana and Jun Wah. Amir is a handsome boy. Ramana is very funny. Jun Wah is very clever. I like to
travel with them. It is exciting to travel with them. [52 words]
I have a small family. My father is a bus driver. My mother is a housewife. I have two brothers. I love
my family very much. Last week my family and I went to Kedah. My father took us in his car. We went
there to visit my grandmother. I love her very much. She always gives me money. [59 words]
We reached my grandmother’s house in the evening. My grandmother was very joyful to see us.
Then I opened my father’s car to take my bag. My father took his bag and my mother also took her bag.
My brothers also took their bags. My bag was missing. I forgot to bring my bag! I had no extra clothes. I
was very sad. My mother was sad too. My father scolded me because I forgot to bring my bag. [79

Suddenly, I remembered something. I had some old clothes in my grandmother’s cupboard. I quickly
opened her cupboard and looked for my clothes. I found a few clothes. Some of them were tight. I could
wear only one pair. I used them for the night. My grandmother was happy. The next morning, my
grandmother gave me some money. I went to the shop near her house and bought some new clothes. I
was thrilled. [74 words]
From the experience I learned to be more careful. I always check my things before I leave my house.
