Monomial
A monomial is a real number, a
variable, or a product of a real
number and one or more
variables with whole number
exponents.
Examples: 5, x, 3wy2, 4x3

The degree of a monomial in one variable

is the exponent of the variable.
Polynomial

A polynomial is a monomial or
sum of monomials.
Examples: 3xy2 + 2x - 5
The degree of a polynomial in one
variable is the greatest degree
among its monomial terms.
Examples: 2x2 + 5x - 3
Basic properties of exponents

x2  x4 = (x  x) (x  x  x  x)
= x2+4 = x6
p  p3 = (p) (p p  p)
= p1+3 = p4
Property 1. states that when multiplying powers with the same base,
add the exponents.

xn  xm = xn+m
Examples
example solution

x x
2 5
=x2+5 = x7

a4  a2 =a4+2 = a6

b6  b 7 =b6+7 = b13

m12  m8 m12+8 = m20

Basic properties of exponents

( p4)3 = (p4  p4  p4)

= p4+4+4 = p12
(x2 )4 = (x2  x2  x2  x2)
= x2+2+2+2 = x8
Property 2. States that when raising a power, we multiply exponents.

(xm)n = xm(n) =xmn

Examples
example solution

(x )

=x25 = x10

(a5)7 =a5 7 = a35

(y9)7 =y9  7 = y63

(n12)2 n12  2 = n20

Basic properties of exponents
( 2x)3 = (2x) (2x) (2x)
=2  2  2  x  x  x
= 8x3
(-2xy5)2 = (-2xy5) (-2xy5)
=(-2) (-2) (x) (x) (y5) (y5)
=4x3y10
Property 3. states that when raising a monomial to a power, raise each
factor to the indicated power.

(xym)n = xnymn
Examples
example solution

(2x2y3)4 =(24) (x2)4 (y3)4 = 16x8y12

(-3ab5)3 =(-3)3(a)3 (b5)3 = -27 a3b15
