ICT Intervention in the

Classroom in the 21st

Century Education
Information & Communication Technologies
What is ICT?
• ICT stands for
• I – information
• C – communication
• T - technologies
• ICT are defined as a “diverse set of technological tools
and resources used to communicate, and to create,
disseminate, store, and manage information”.
Benefits of using ICT in the
Classroom for Teachers
• With countless online resources, technology can help
improve teaching.
• Teachers can use different apps or trusted online
resources to enhance the traditional ways of teaching and
to keep students more engaged.
• Virtual lesson plans, grading software and online
assessments can help teachers save a lot time.
• This valuable time can be used for working with students
who are struggling.
• Having virtual learning environments in schools enhances
collaboration and knowledge sharing between teachers.
Benefits of using ICT in the
Classroom for Students
• By using technology in the classroom, both teachers
and students can develop skills essential for the 21st
century.
• Students can gain the skills they will need to be
successful in the future.
• Modern learning is about collaborating with others,
solving complex problems, critical thinking, developing
different forms of communication and leadership
skills, and improving motivation and productivity.
Benefits of Using ICT in the
Classroom for Students
• What is more, technology can help develop many
practical skills, including creating presentations,
learning to differentiate reliable from unreliable
sources on the Internet, maintaining proper online
etiquette, and writing emails.
• These are very important skills that can be developed
in the classroom.
ICT Tools/Equipment that can be
used in the Classroom
• A presentation clicker for classroom mobility. The best
one I’ve found is Logitech.

• A visualizer or document camera for displaying

student work, or presenting live feedback.
• Tablet devices for teacher and student e.g. iPad and
not necessarily

• Recording hardware/software for podcasting e.g.

microphone, headphone and speakers.

• A digital camera for showcasing work in film or

photographs.
• A social media output channel to connect with
students, parents and fellow classrooms outside your 4
walls.

• USB or Wi-Fi access for document sharing and device

connectivity. Again, rewind just 7 or 8 years ago …

• A projector with interactive whiteboard functionality or

television screen connectivity.
Emerging Communication
Technologies that can be used in the
Classroom
• Smartphones- By allowing mobile devices in school
you can expand learning outside of the classroom.

• Blogging-By setting up a classroom blog and expecting

students to participate, blogging can increase literacy
skills and engagement.
What is Edmodo?
• Edmodo is an educational technology company
offering a communication, collaboration, and coaching
platform to K-12 schools and teachers.
• The Edmodo network enables teachers to share
content, distribute quizzes, assignments, and manage
communication with students, colleagues, and parents.
• Edmodo is very teacher-centric in their design and
philosophy: students and parents can only join Edmodo
if invited to do so by a teacher.
• Teachers and students spend large amounts of time on
the platform, both in and out of the classroom.
Use Edmodo for Teachers
• Edmodo can be incorporated into classrooms through
a variety of applications.
• Current uses include posting assignments, where they
could be sorted for example by either who did not
turned in their assignment or graded and not graded.
• It is also good for creating polls for student responses
with the advantage of instant feedback which makes
the work easier on the teacher.
Use Edmodo for Students
• Edmodo allows the students to upload assignments for
their teachers to view and grade.
• Students who are normally shy in the classroom, can
take advantage of Edmodo and use it to speak
privately with the teacher.
Disadvantage of ICT in the
Classroom
• Body Language and Non-Verbal Cues-Non-verbal cues
are a vital part of the way humans communicate, with
55 % of the message pertaining to feelings and
attitudes portrayed by people is in facial expression
alone.
• As such, there is an increased chance that your
message will be misunderstood if you are not engaged
in face-to-face dialog with the person you are talking
to.
• Education – Computer’s along with their programs
and the Internet have created educational
opportunities not available to previous generations

• Setting - setting up the device can be very trouble

some
• Expensive - too expensive to afford
• Lack of experience - hard for teachers to use with a
lack of experience using ICT tools.
